Employability Skills '94, a mini-conference designed for senior students at Port Perry High School, brings employers and educators together to work for the students. The day-long seminar on May 17 at the Port Perry United Church will consist of a series of workshops co-led by teachers and members of the business community. According to Lucy Black, a teacher at PPHS and co- ordinator of the conference, the purpose of the event is "to devel- op the students' skills and heighten the awareness of skills development." The panel of speakers in- cludes representatives from the insurance industry, manufac- turing sector, hospital and health care workers, building trades and retail sales. More than 30 speakers will be in- volved. "I've tried really hard to get a good Cross- -section and I think we've gotone," Mrs. Black said. "We've been overwhelmed by the interest and support. It's been encouraging.' The conference was initiated by the Durham Board of Educa- tion which selected Port Perry High School as the location for the pilot project. The day-long conference will follow closely the guidelines de- veloped by the Conference Board of Canada. According to the Conference Board, potential employers are seeking candidates with aca- demic, teamwork and personal management skills.
