24 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 1,1994 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice " Sixteen rinks competed Saturday in a Men's Open Bonspiel at Port Perry Curling Club with the Warriner rink taking top honors with 48 points. Members of the winning rink are seen above, from left, Ralph Fairman, vice skip, sponsor Glenn Evans presenting trophy to skip Garnet Warriner, Bill Tredway, 2nd, and John Butler, lead. The spiel was co-sponsored by Port Perry Auto Glass & Trim, Whitby Auto Glass Specialists and Can-Am Auto Glass and Supplies. Shepstone Petites' playoff picture Well, lightning does strike the same spot twice and the Shepstone Haulage Petite Bs have proof of that fact as they came back from a deficit of 4-1 to beat Ajax 5-4 in a real thrill- er. That was the second win over previously unbeaten Ajax in a week as they shut them out last weekend 2-0. The Rockettes playoff situa- tion brightened up a lot with these two wins. Port jumped out 1-0 on a hard low shot into the net by Nicole, assisted by Katherine, but Ajax forged ahead with four straight goals. The girls comeback started with that never say die attitude and some great saves by Jill be- tween the pipes when it looked like the game was out of reach. Port's second goal was the re- verse of the first as Katherine popped one in with the pass from Nicole. Stacey made 1t 4-3 on a great individual rush to- wards the net and then Leanne L.. took advantage of a goal- mouth scramble and picked up the loose ring and backhanded it past the goalie to tie the game at 4-4 withonly 1:10 remaining. The game looked like it was headed for a tie when coach Vir- tue called time out to rally his troops with just 41 seconds left, and with their free pass in our end, the Ajax coach pulled their goalie for an extra attacker to go for the win. But the move worked to our advantage as the play went into the Ajax end and Katherine fed a pass to Stacey and she found the open net just too much to pass up and sealed our win with 13 seconds show- ing on the clock. The comeback was a com- bined team effort with our de- fensive pairs of Sarah and Shannon, and Heather and Kimberley keeping a close check on the Ajax offense and our forwards of Alaina, Rhea, Leanne D., Sheena hustling every shift and getting several good scoring chances. Plus our goaltending from Jill has been outstanding game af- ter game and has kept us in those games. With the two wins against Ajax, the Rocketees were look- ing ahead with optimism to their weekend confrontation with Pickering who we hadn't beat all year. Port drew first blood in a con- test that involved plenty of body contact and a couple of injuries. It was a super effort by Shan- non who took the ring on a relay outside the free play line and worked her way through the tough Pickering defense (and big #20) and her shot just man- aged to trickle over the line for a 1-0 lead. Pickering answered with two goals to take the lead and could of had more except for our solid goalie, Jill, who kicked out sev- eral labelled shots. With less than five minutes left, Stacey tied the game up 2-2 and that score held up until Pickering scored on a close goalmouth scramble to take the lead 3-2 with 1:32 remaining. Jill was pulled for the extra attacker and the Rockettes tried for the equalizer but time ran out. Although the loss put a dim- mer on our playoff hopes, the players have a positive attitude heading into the final month of play and are working hard and playing with determination and confidence. Scugog meets Lions Saturday, Feb. 26 saw Scugog and the Lions square off in the final regular season match be- fore the playoffs. Scugog jumped out to an car- ly 3-0 lead in the first period on goals by John Ragalski, Andrew Kenny, and Glenn Thompson. Assists went to Mike Hatfield, T.T. Robins, and John Ragalski. The Lions cut the margin by one before the end of the period when Shaun Martin scored un- assisted. oo or. Shaun Martin's second goal brought the Lions within two but Adam Douglas put the game on ice for Scugog with an assist from Glean Thompson. Stefan Senyk and Cory McQuade assisted on Martin's goal. Shane Fisher held the Lions at bay throughout most of the gaine with great goaltending. In the Lions cage Ken Lukas put on a superb effort after nu- merous Scugogonslaughters. Good luck in the playoffs. Doormen victorious 9 From Page 22 ney came flying into the New- market zone over to Blayne Kin- nunen in the slot and again Port Perry got stoned. Port Perry was pressing hard trying to get the all important first goal. At 4:05 David Gainey came into the Newmarket zone with Nick Pelyk and the two sharp shoots got denied! David Gainey set up Blayne Kinnunen in close but the game remained scoreless. Blayne Kinnunen came in all alone at 3:28 and after two hard low shots skated away shaking his head in disbelief. Port Perry kept the pressure on and finally at 2:03 Brad Johnston found Scott Sanderson in the slot and Port grabbed a 1-0 lead as he fires it between the goalies legs. At 1:26 Deryk Campbell smacked a Newmarket winger along the side boards breaking up a Newmarket rush. With 0:39 showing on the clock Blayne Kinnunen slid a nice pass over to David Gainey as he scored a Tiger Williams type goal. As the first period ended Port Perry was ahead 2-0. Newmarket was pressing at 14:50 catching Port Perry flat footed and scored at 14:42 to close the gap to 2-1. Port Perry came right back just one minute later when David Gainey took the play into the Newmarket zone over to Blayne Kinnunen to Nick Pelyk at the side of the Newmarket net and he scored to give Port a 3-1. At 13:36 Port almost had another one when Nick Pelyk set up Blayne Kin- nunen in front. The line of Da- vid Gainey, Blayne Kinnunen and Nick Pelyk were really fly- ing, coming up with some good scoring chances. Brad Johnston was free wheeling out there playing good two-way hockey and forecheck- ing in his spare time. Port's de- fense was holding up quite well with Aaron Chambers, Chris Jones, Jeff Neal, Scott Harper and Ryan Moynes all playing in vour face hockey. Deryk Camp- bell, Brad Johnston and Scott Sanderson were pressing hard in the Newmarket zone but to no avail. At 7:07 Newmarket had two shots at the Port Perry net and scored to make it a 3-2 game. David Gainey and Kinnunen had a two-way passing play go- ing as Gainey split the New- market defence and was in all alone as the goaltender from Newmarket came up big again. Brad Johnston handed out a huge hit inside the Newmarket blue line and that enabled Scott Sanderson to waltz in all alone on the goaltender but it was not today Scott on this play. Newmarket came right back hemming Port Perry in their own zone but #18 got two hard ones off from the point but he found out that the Port Perry goalie was good also. At 5:12 Ryan Moynes let a hard shot go from the Newmarket blue line and David Gainey finds a way to fire it past the Newmarket goal- tender. Alex Wordley was skat- ing well and found a loose puck just inside the Newmarket blue line and dinged it off the post to keep the game at 4-2. With the period winding down and everyone on the edge of their seats Blayne Kinnunen sent a Newmarket winger on the seat of his pants in a hurry as he delivered the big hit. Nick Pelyk was playing good heads up hockey. At 3:31 the faceoff was in the Newmarket zone and Brad Johnston let one fly right from the draw high to the cor- ner to beat the goaltender clean- ly. At 0:35 Travis Pickard dinged one on the crossbar when he launched one from in close. Newmarket trapped Port Perry in their own zone at 13:11 but Aaron Chambers made a good defensive move and dumped the puck down the ice to take off the pressure. Blayne Kinnunen hit the bullet at 12:01 when he got hammered along the side boards. At 10:16 Chris Jones fired one from the point just inside the Newmar- ket blue line and Brad Johnston just tipped it wide. Deryk Campbell wasn't getting much in the way of scoring but he did alot of hard work in front of the Newmarket net and took a lot of abuse for all his trouble at 9:08. The line of Johnston, Camp- bell and Sanderson set it up well in the Newmarket zone but came away empty. The Port Perry coaches had the Doorsmen playing good dis- ciplined and dedicated hockey. Nick Pelyk cut loose a hard shot from the point that caught the goaltenders shoulder and de- flected to the corner. Scott San- derson and Jeff Neal playing short handed did a good job of getting the puck down the ice to take the heat off. Newmarket got a penalty and all of a sudden #8 lost his cool for Newmarket and it was time to load up the bus as Harper waved goodbye to both players. Port Perry defeated Newmar- ket 5-2. Port Perry outshot 'Newmarket 31-28. Playing in goal for Port Perry was Corey Branton. There isn't any honorable mention as Port did it all as a team.
