"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" Malmont Atom As eliminate Collingwood | On Keb. 25, our rep team won by a 7-3 margin to sweep their quarter-final series three games to none over their Col- lingwood opponents. By win- ning, they also extended their win streak to six games and they hope to continue it further against their next opponent Al- liston. In the first period, the teams exchanged goals with Jason Whitworth connecting for Port on an assist by Matt MacMas- ter. Both teams were feeling each other out and anxious not to make any glaring mistakes. Dane Gray was backchecking tenaciously for Port while Grant Hooker and Joel Thom- son were intercepting passes and shutting down Collingwood rushes into their defensive ter- ritory. Chris Monsma was alert- ly covering loose pucks around his crease and "seeing" the puck well. The second period was evenly played and the Collingwood boys were taking advantage of occasional miscues to keep the score close and avoid playoff elimination. Port tied the score at 2-2 when Dean Van Camp found an opening high on the stick side from a bad angle after Jason and David Justynski had done the helping work to keep the puck in the offensive zone. Matt MacMaster gave a little breathing room to Port with only 14 seconds left in the sec- ond period when he dented the net on assists by Billy Carr and Dean Van Camp. Chris Skerratt was playing his usual strong defensive game throughout while Sean Jetfrey and Tim Jones were playing well from their rearguard posi- tions in controlling pucks along the boards and clearing men from around their own goal crease. Collingwood popped a quick goal to start the third period and this started the Port par- ents thinking about four hours in the car the next day to and from Collingwood! Billy Carr quickly eased eve- ryone's mind when he scored only 30 seconds later (assists by Matt MacMaster and Dean Van Camp). The Malmont boys de- cided not to relinquish the lead thereafter and went on to pump in goals by Scott Brownson, Steve Wygerde and Jason Whit- worth to ice the win for Port! Assisting in the latter Port scores were Steve Wygerde, Adam Moynes (nice passes! - two), Jason Whitworth, two, and Dean Van Camp. Good of- fence starts with quick clear- outs from your own zone and Matt Cracknell and David Jus- tynski followed the coaches' in- structions well to achieve this. [t was interesting to note, as well, that in the third period when our lads scored the most goals, we incurred our fewest penalties...might be something in that? Congratulations on your se- ries victory and good luck in playing smart, intense hockey against Alliston. Fans will need to check the Arena schedule board for the next Malmont game. Peewee Legionnaires take 3-0 series lead On Feb. 26, the Legionaires travelled to Collingwood to con- tinue their best of seven series. After a combination of a two- week layoff and a convincing win in their last game with Col- lingwood, the boys thought it was just a matter of showing up and going through the motions of a hockey game. As usual, Collingwood start- ed fast and took an early lead from a scramble in front of the Port goalie Shane Savage. Port came back hard with good fore- checking, creating good scoring chances, only to be stopped with some great saves by Colling- wood, resulting in 1-0 lead after one period. At the 11 second mark in the second period, Collingwood went to work and scored early in the power play, only to have the goal called back as a Port player was in the crease. With 15 seconds left in the power play, Casey Van Schagen poked the puck past the Collingwood goalie to tie the game at one. As- sists went to Derek Tindall and Adam Jones. The next 12 min- utes, both goaltenders came up with good saves to hold their re- gpective teams in the game. At 2:47, Seth Gray worked hard in the offensive corner, came up with the puck and, making a pass to the front of the net, hit a Collingwood player and deflect- ed into the net to gave Port a 2-1 lead after two periods. In the third period, with good chances at both ends and excel- lent penalty killing from both teams, the third period was winding down and Port was called on a penalty at 1:49. Col- lingwood went on the power play and scored 57 seconds later to send the game into overtime. In the overtime, Shane came up big early and at 3:29 Adam J. carried the puck deep into Col- lingwood's zone. Skating be- hind the net, he threw the puck out in front of the nct hitting the goaltenders stick and bouncing into the net for the game winner, assisted by Glenn McCready. From the faceoff at centre, Port dumped the puck deep into Collingwoods' end and with good forechecking, created a giveaway high into the slot to Jeff Ashton who blasted a slap- shot high into the net to give Port the assurance goal. Assist went to Derek and a 3-0 lead in the senes. After the two week layoff, the Legion team looked a little rusty and didn't have their hit- ting and skating game that won the first two games. But Col- lingwood must be given credit for their hustle, tight checking and outhitting the Port team. Next game in this series goes Friday, March 5 at 9 p.m. at Port Perry. Come out and watch the Legionaires try to wrap up the series with Colling- wood. PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 1,1994 - 23 The XL Gas Bar Novice C Ringette team won silver medals at the Kingston Valentine's Rin- £4 gette Tournament held recently. Pictured are the members of the winning team. (Front, left) Cei- lidh Baxter, Whitney Reid, Alaina Burger, Heather Imrie and Ashley Aldridge. (Middle) Sarah Al- dridge, Janna Ostafichuk, Jackie Pashley, Kristen Waller, Christine Cotie and Holly Allison. (Back) Dave Reid, Lynda Burger and Jim Allison. XL Eaglettes win silver The XL Gas Bar Eaglettes, Novice C Ringette team trav- elled to Kingston for the Annual Valentine's Ringette Tourna- ment. The Eaglettes opened up their schedule on Friday after- noon playing a team from Glou- cester. Despite the long drive, the girls outplayed the oppo- nents winning 13-2. *The next morning, the Ea- glettes played the Mighty Ducks from Cumberland and won again 11-1. That afternoon they met with a bigger, more ex- perienced Ajax team and lost 11-3. This two and one record gave the girls second place overall and entry into the finals. Port played Ajax in the final on Sunday and ended up losing 10-2. Even though we lost twice to Ajax, the girls played very well and really deserved the sil- ver medals for second place. Scoringin the tournament for Port was Alaina (13), Jackie (six), Ceilidh (three), Kristen (three), Ashley (two) and Chris- tine (two). Assists were made by, Janna (four), Whitney (three), Holly (three), Ceilidh (three), Kristen (three), Jackie (two), Christine (two) and Ashley (two). All in all everyone en- Joyed themselves, especially the swimming pool in the hotel. Just prior to the Valentine's Tournament, the Eaglettes played three league games, one against Markham and a pair against Oshawa. Against Markham, Port was able to win a very close, see-saw contest 7-6. The Eaglettes were not as fortunate against Oshawa, however, losing both games 8-3 and 5-2. Scoring for Port in these three games were Alaina (eight), Jackie (two), Ceilidh and Christine with assists go- ing to Jackie (two), Ashley (two), Holly (two), Christine (two), Alaina and Kristen. The week following the Val- entine's Tournament, the Ea- glettes entered the Oshawa Op- timist Tournament. After playing teams from Pickering, Oshawa and Brooklin/Whitby, Port ended up with a win, a loss and a tie. This put them in a vir- tual tie with Oshawa for second place but we lost out on goals for and against. The Eaglettes lost to Picker- ing 13-1, tied Oshawa 6-6 and beat Brooklin/Whitby 14-3. The Port goals were scored by Alaina (eight), Jackie (six), Heather (three), Whitney (two), Ceilidh and Christine. Assists were made by Whitney (five), Christine (two), Heather (two), Ceilidh, Holly, Janna and Kris- ten. The highlight of this tourna- ment is the 6-6 tie against Oshawa. In view of the previous two losses to Oshawa, the tie shows that the girls are con- stantly improving. Although not figuring in the scoring, Sarah has started to contribute more and more to the team. Keep up the good work!! Of special note is the great goal- tending performances of Janna and Heather. Goaltending can be quite discouraging at times and I want to thank these two girls for continuing to give a 100 per cent effort whenever called upon.
