The winners tied the Carrie Fielding rink with 43 points each, but won the bonspie! with a score of 28-26. Techstar Bantams up two games on Newmarket squad On Friday, Feb. 18 the Port Perry Techstar Bantams hosted their first game of the playoffse- ries against Newmarket. It was evident from the drop of the puck that both teams were ready to play hockey. This was the type of "edge of your seat" game that the fans were looking for. The visitors played a fast wheeling game as Port's strong forechecking caught Newmarket off guard. Port took the lead early in the first with Matt Phillips skating around the Newmarket players to make a nice pass to Shane Norton. It didn't take Newmar- ket long to respond. With 1:04 remaining in the first period. Gavin Baxter and Todd Parry set one up for Ryan Puckrin to take the lead. Early in the second Newmar- ket scored two goals to move them ahead. But that didn't last long as Matt Phillips took-ad- vantage of the Newmarket goal- ielookingthe other way. Port regained their lead in the third when Todd Parry and Matt Phillips fed the pass to Shane Norton. The play see- cawed back and forth as New- market scored again. Just when everyone was thinking over time with 45 seconds remaining on the clock Shane Norton came up with a great pass from Matt Phillips to take the game 5-4. Ashley Van Schelven netted the first goal of the game as he picked up the puck along the boards being dumped into the Newmarket zone by Robert Gracie. New- market was quick to respond, but then again so was Port when Ryan Puckrin blasted one off the goal post, Trevor Smith assisted. Newmarket scored only min- utes later to reduce the Port Perry lead. The first period scoring ended with Todd Parry making one of his great passes from behind the net to catch Shane Norton waitingin theslot. The second period was hard, fast hockey by both teams, but Port was able to hold Newmar- ket. The only goal scored in the second was scored by Matt Bax- ter on a rebound from a Trevor Smith slap shot off the point. The stars were on a roll and not about to back down as they potted three more in the third period. Ashley Van Schelven netted two in the third for a hat trick. John Kyle got the at- tack going with a nice wrap around goal at 3:40 of the sec- ond period. Paul Phillips earned two as- sists on goals by Chris McKitte- rick and Pierce Jones in the third period. Jason Cottrell tied the game at 5:09 with the assist going to Billy Britt. For Re/Max Stuart Cochrane scored two unassisted goals and assisted on another scored by Justin Koury. Mike Whalen with Chris Milligan assisting also scored a goal. Tyler Webb for Van Camp Contracting and Jeff Glanville for Re/Max were the netmind- ers. For Port Perry Printing Der- ek Bond scored two goals and Devon Howsam scored the oth- er. Between the pipes for Hau- gens was Alexander Nicolaou and for the Printers Mark Lott. Last chance for Cartwright ball Registrations for minor ball players in the Cartwright Mi- nor Ball Association are at record levels, with divisions nearing maximum capacity. Players interested in playing this year should be sure to at- tend the registration at the Blackstock Arena on Saturday, --_ Feb. 26 between 8 a.m. and Haugens came up the winner "noon. by a goal against Port Perry Printing. Last years response to the in- troduction of hardball was such a success that it will be offered again this year along with the regular softball program. The softball teams will play within the Cartwright area parks, while the hardball teams will play as a part of the Scugog Baseball Association. The Cart- wright hardball teams will play half their games in Cartwright, and the other halfin Port Perry. Boys and girls between the ages of five and 18 are encouraged to come out for this registration. The association is also look- ing for volunteer coaches and assistants. Overhead Doors tie series On Sunday, Feb. 20, the Scu- gog Overhead Doors Peewee B "hockey club played host to New- market in game two of their best of five quarter final series. It didn't take long for this one to get going when the Doorsmen lit up the scoreboard first when Scott Sanderson grabbed the puck at centre ice and hit Brad Johnston with a perfect pass at the Newmarket blueline to De- ryk Campbell in front as he slammed a low shot to the far corner to give Port Perry the all- important first goal and 1-0 lead. Brad Johnston was really fly- ing out there doing some nice forechecking. Nick Pelyk was having one of his best games of the season and playing good . two-way hockey at 13:10 when he dinged one off the post. The Overhead Doors captain David Gainey rang one off the post also, at 12:58. Travis Pickard made a good poke check at cen- tre ice to nullify a two on one Newmarket rush at 11:52. Jeff Neal the big Port Perry defence- man handed out a big hit in the Port Perry zone and dumped the puck safely down the ice to take the heat off. Scott Harper took his man into the boards big time and also came away with the puck and caused a two on one on the Newmarket goalie at 9:31. At 8:12 Travis Pickard was in alone on the Newmarket goalie but got shut down. Jeff Neal waltzed down the full length of the ice at 7:53 but got clobbered deep in the Newmarket zone for all his trouble. Port was really applying the body, causing some huge turnovers. At 6:00 Brad Johnston (beast) got hit hard in the neutral zone but came away unshaken. Port Perry was playing well in front of the large hometown crowd but was getting shipghtly out shot" Dave Gainey and Nick Pe lyk" had a good rush at 5H 01 which saw some classic passing "The Legend Kid Justin hand ed out a good hit on the side boards at 4:05. Alex Wordley who 1s improving more and more every game apphed a bys hit on a Newmarket winger cruising over the Port Perry blue hine. Travis Pickard set up Alex Wordley in front as he fired 1t past the Newmarket goalie for a 2-0 lead. Ryan Moynes brought the puck into the centre ice area, to Brad Johnston who put Scott San- derson into the clear and in on a one on one breakaway with the Newmarket goalie as he scored to give Port Perry a 3-0 lead. Nick Pelyk took his man deep in the Port Perry zone into the corner and he quickly put the winger on the seat of his pants. Newmarket intercepted a clear- ing pass and was in alone on the Port Perry goal and scored to close the gap to 3-1. Brad Johnston and Scott Sanderson were in close on the Newmarket goal but were de- nied. Chris Jones and Aaron Chambers were playing good defence, keeping Port ahead. Port Perry was pressing at 13:28. Ryan Moynes, Aaron Chambers, Jeff Neal, Scott Harper and Chris Jones were all playing well inside of the Port Perry blue line. Newmar- ket wasn't just sitting back let- ting Port Perry score, no siree, they were firing lots of rubber at the Port Perry goal also. Brad Johnston made a neat move in front of the Newmarket goal, forcing the goalie to make the save. David Gainey was throwing a lot of good checks out in this one at 12:58. At 12:36, scored to make it 3-2. Scott Sanderson was in alone at 8:07 but got shut down. Port Perry was hemmed in their own zone at 7:11 but came away without any damage being caused. Sanderson got another good rush going at 6:47. Travis Pickard and Justin Sheehey put on a nice passing clinic at 5:51 and had two shots on goal. Scott Harper let a good shot go from the point that just missed the open corner. Port was play- ing as a team again and having some good chances. At 3:23, Scott Harper put a prood pass up to Scott Sander- son cruising over the Newmar- ket blue line to Brad Johnston who made a might deposit be- hind the shding goaltender to ive Port a 4-2 lead. With Just 2:00 showing on the clock, Jus- tin Shechey took a big hit be- hind the Port Perry net and ended up dumping the puck down the ice out of harm's way. Port had the faceoff with 27 sec- onds 1nside the Newmarket blue line and pulled their goal- ie, looking for a quick one with six skaters to nve but it didn't work out as the period ended 4- 2 for Port Perry over Newmar- ket. Port Perry opened the third period quickly when Alex Wor- dley hit Scott Harper with a nice pass to Travis Pickard deep in the Newmarket zone and "he scores" to make the score 5-2 for Port. Travis Pick- ard set up Justin Sheehey at 13:38 but the Newmarket goal- ie turned him away empty- handed. Brad Johnston and 4; Scott Harper were patrolling # the boards well and handing # out some heavy body checks at ! 11:22. At 10:01, Scott Harper | and Jeff Neal took their men into the corner and smack, down they go. At 9:14, Newmar- ket was pressing and the Port Perry goalie had to stop a lot of rubber. Port turned things around and mostly dominated the third period as Deryk Campbell set up Scott Sander- son at 3:56 as he buried one deep in the Newmarket goal to make it 6-2. Blayne Kinnunen was putting big hits on New- market all night long and doing | a lot of forechecking and gener- ally skating miles out there. With less than two minutes left in the game, David Gainey was in all alone on the Newmarket goaltender but got pulled down Just as he was about to let one rip. Port Perry played as a team and teamwork does pay off. Playing in goal for Port Perry and seeing 50 shots was Corey Branton. Port Perry had 40 shots on Newmarket. Honora- ble mention for good hustle goes to Alex Wordley and Nick Pelyk. Scott Harper and Ryan Moynes get the nod for good de- fensive effort.
