"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, February 8, 1994 - 37 Eagles drop first game of playoffs Port Perry Precision Con- struction Kagles trail Milton Sandstone Midgets by one game, after a 4-1 loss at home Friday night. : Monday night, the Eagles hosted the Trenton Golden Hawks in an exhibition tuneup for their quarter-final series. The Hawks are a solid club, and despite a strong Port effort, went home with a 7-5 win. After an early Hawk goal, Daryl Bourgeois took an Ian Shrigley pass coast to coast to tie the score. Chad Kearns then took a Bourgeois pass at the Hawk line and drove to the net to give the Eagles a 2-1 lead. Trenton potted a quick pair early in the second before Bour- geois notched his second, de- flecting Ian McCready's point shot in front. The Hawks then added another pair to reopen a two-goal bulge. Bourgeois then completed his hat trick, firing a backhander off another excel- lent rush. Greg Thompson and Jeff Jamieson drew assists on Bourgeois' fourth point of the game. The Hawks went out in front 6-4 with just over a min- ute left in the period. On Saturday, Feb. 5, the Swamp Auto Body of the Port Perry Bantam House League travelled to Uxbridge to take on PDM Foods of Uxbridge. The Swampers started off slow as their first clearing at- tempt was intercepted and passed to an uncovered man out front who scored to give Ux- bridge a 1-0 lead less than a minute into the game. The Swampers took control for the rest of the period but could not find the open man for any goals. (Got to start passing to the open man again, guys.) The Swamp were caught off guard early in the second period as even goalie Doug Short looked out of place on this one to give Uxbridge a 2-0 lead. At the halfway mark of the period, the Swampers turned it on and fi- nally after making a few good passes, hit the open man and bang, they're back in the game, 2-1. The goal was fired in by Lisa Bonser, assisted by Kris Wootton and Big Nick Skerratt. This passing idea clicked again as Kevin Edwards tipped in the perfect pass from Jamie Sauter and things are all tied up at 2-2. The third period was once again dominated early by Ux- The Shepstone Haulage Pe- tite Ringette team was back in action after a two week layoff with games in Richmond Hill and at home to Whitby. In the game against Richmond Hill, the Rockettes played well but came up short in a 6-3 loss. The girls started out strong as Alai- na scored on the opening free pass from Sarah. It caught Richmond Hill by surprise, but must have also woke them up as they came back with two quick goals to take the lead and held it for the rest of the game. Rhea got the Haulers back in the hunt with a pice goal to even the game at two but again the R. Hill team struck quickly for a 3- The teams battled through a scoreless third until Jeremy Norton made a nice effort to send Sean Ellis in on a breaka- way with 46 seconds left. Ellis turned on the jets and fired a bullet to close the gap to 6-5. Against six attackers, Trenton weathered some close calls and counted an empty-netter with three seconds left. Friday night, the Eagles opened the OMHA quarter- finals with a solid effort, but a couple of bad breaks at the wrong times left them on the short end of a 4-1 score. After a scoreless first, Ellis gave Port the lead, taking a nifty drop pass from Jeremy Geer and us- ing Geer as a screen on his high, accurate wrist shot. Unfortunately, Milton made the most of a couple of chances to take the intermission lead at 2-1, then capitalized on a givea- way early in the third to go up 3-1. With Port pressing, the vis- itors counted one more later in the period to complete the scor- ing. The Eagles travel to Milton Monday night to try to even the series at one game each. Swamp lose 4-3 bridge as they scored on an- other breakaway to take a 3-2 lead. With under five minutes left in the game, the Swampers turned it on again and Jamie Sauter scored, assisted by Jay Fletcher to tie the game at three apiece. With only a minute left to play and the faceoff in the Swampers' end, they forgot to cover the open man off the draw. Uxbridge won the draw and the uncovered man took the pass and managed to get a good shot on net and get his rebound under the Swampers' goalie while still uncovered. With the goalie pulled and time running out, the Swampers appeared to take turns trying to skate the puck end-to-end without pass- ing at all. The Swampers could not manage a goal and lost by the score of 4-3. Great defensive effort goes to "Big" Nick Sker- ratt who took out Uxbridge players with ease and some- times even took out two men at a time. The next Swampers game is Saturday, Feb. 12 in Uxbridge against Uxbridge Sports with a 7 p.m. start. This is the final game of the regular schedule before the playoffs begin. Good Luck Swampers. 2 lead. Stacey continued our comeback with a backward goal that hopefully would rally our troops. But as the game progressed, their goalie got stingier with every shot and after a couple more goals against, the momen- tum was with the opposition and any attempt to rally was stopped. Nicole rounded out the scoring for the Haulers on a hard sweep shot to the corner with Rhea assisting. Whitby never gave up and got closer with two goals in the last five minutes.
