Last year the ice fishing sea- son on the lake was cut short due to the Ministry of Natural Resources' concerns over the quality of fishing, and in partic- ular the number of walleye be- ing harvested. - The recommendation to close the lake in December and March was seen as an effort to help restore the walleye popula- tion. "Fishing has been good on this side (of the lake), but not very good on the Caesarea side," according to Dale Irvin of JD Fishing and Archery Supplies. "But, there are constant lim- itscomingin," he added. "Many fishermen have come into the shop, saying this is the best fishing they have seen in 10 years on the lake," said Richie Tripp of Causeway Live Bait. He said anglers are coming in with constant limits as well as some big fish. "They are averaging six to seven fish a night," he said. According to anglers coming into his store, the best fishing of late has been after 6 p.m. and those fishingin the area of Gore- ski's Marina have been very suc- cessful. A spokesperson with the Min- istry of Natural Resources, which is conducting a creel on the lake, described the fishing on Scugog this winter as "spot- ty." The number of huts on the lake this year, compared to last season, has dropped by only 54, but is down drastically from the 1992 record high of 804 huts. The number of huts and the anglers on the lake is down, but there are still a fair number of people coming in to get bait, said Mr. Irvin. Mr. Tripp agreed, saying his store has been very busy, espe- cially on the weekends, when he is going non-stop until about 4:30 p.m. By that time, he says most fishermen want to be on the lake fishing.
