"A Family Tradition for 127 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, February 1,1994 - 29 Doors burn Trenton in game one of playoff series On Saturday, Jan. 29 the Scu- gog Overhead Doors Peewee "B" hockey club played host to the Trenton Golden Hawks. The Doorsmen weren't very good hosts as they took the play to Trenton right off the bat giving the Golden Hawks no quarter. It took just 39 seconds into the first period for Port Perry to fire up the scoreboard when Ryan McQuade put a beauty pass over to Brad Johnston at the Trenton blue line, in front to Deryk Campbell and say good night Ralph as he buried it deep in the Trenton net for a 1-0 lead. Theline of Alex Wordley, Tra- vis Pickard and Blayne Kinnu- nen came flying into the Tren- ton end of the rink and made a nice tic-tac-toe play that grazed the far post. At 12:06 Nick Pe- lyk set up Brad Johnston in the slot and the Trenton goal tender made a big save to keep the score at 1-0 for Port Perry. At 11:34 Nick Pelyk, Brad Johnston and Deryk Campbell had Trenton hemmed in their own zone but came away empty handed. Trenton came right back in a hurry, coming in over the Port Perry blue line three abreast but Jeff Neal poke checked the puck away and shut it down the ice white playing short handed. Blayne Kinnunen creamed a Trenton winger at centre and coming up with the loose puck at 8:45. Nick Pelyk went into the Trenton corner and came away with the puck giving Port Perry a good scoring opportunity at 8:10. Scott Sanderson was handing out some hefty body checks and taking a few inbe- tween. Dave Gainey thumped a Trenton player in front of the Trenton net and only a good save by the goalie kept this a one goal game. Port was playing well and had a slight edge in play. There was no more scoring in the first period with Port Perry in front by a score of 1-0. The second period got going quickly when Nick Pelyk fed a nice pass on the stick of Brad Johnston, over to Deryk Camp- bell who blew it past the Tren- ton goaltender to give Port a 2-0 lead at 14:16. Nick Pelyk was handing out some hefty body checks causing some huge turn- overs. David Gainey, Justin Shee- hey and Scott Sanderson made a good rush on the Trenton net at 13:46. Blayne Kinnunen was making some nice checks along the boards keeping the Trenton wingers honest Jeff Neal let loose a hard shot that Deryk Campbell tipped just over the net. The action was hard and fast as both clubs were really pass- ing it on. At 10:38 Trenton was hemmed in their own zone and Nick Pelyk cut loose a wicked shot from the dot up was a little high and wide. Port was really applying the pressure as David Gainey, Nick Pelyk and Justin Sheehey were all around the Trenton net but it just wouldn't go in. At 9:15 Port was having a hard time getting the puck out of their own end when Jeff Neal fired it down the ice to relieve the pressure. With 8:21 show- ing on the clock Trenton scored to close the gap to 2-1. David Gainey came into the Trenton zone and let a hard slap shot go that the goalie had trouble with. Pelyk, Campbell, Johnston and Kinnunen were all using the body well. Ryan Moynes was playing heads up hockey nulifying rush after rush. Aaron Chambers was playing good defence looking after busi- ness in front of his own net. Trenton scored at 4:35 to tie the game at two all. At 1:23 Ryan Moynes put a nice pass to David Gainey streaking over the Tren- ton blue line, over to Scott San- derson and he scores to give Port Perry that one goal lead again 3-2. Port Perry started the third period quickly also when Nick Pelyk put a nice pass over to De- ryk Campbell who fired one high to beat the Trenton goalie and complete his hat trick. Da- vid Gainey took a big check at 12:34 Port Perry was still play- ing well and keeping Trenton off balance. Everybody was playing as a team covering up for each other and the Port Perry goalie was shutting the door on Trenton at the 8 minute mark. Blayne Kinnunen was put- ting on a stick handling demon- stration in front of the Trenton goal and the goalie had to be alert to stop that one at 8:21. Deryk Campbell and Ryan Moynes were really playing with confidence. At 8:04 Aaron Chambers handed out a huge hit deep in the Port Perry zone tostop a Trenton rush. At 7:12 Justin Sheehey fed a head pass to David Gainey who broke in on the Trenton net all alone and fired it past the goal- tender for a 5-2lead. Port scored again at 4:32 when Justin Sheehey hit his buddy David Gainey with a good pass to Scott Sanderson at the right of the Trenton goal as he fired a low shot past the sur- prised goalie for a 6-2 lead. Trenton came right back at 3:47 and scored their third goal to close the gap to 6-3. Ryan McQuade put a nice pass in front of the Trenton net to Brad Johnston and he put one up- stairs just under the crossbar for a 7-3 score as the horn sounded to end the game. Playing in goal for Port Perry was Michael MacLennan. Honorable mention for good hustle goes to Travis Pickard and Deryk Campbell. Aaron Chambers and Ryan Moynes get the nod for good defensive effort. Uxbridge tried to mount an at- tack but came up short. At 6:20 Ryan Moynes kept the puck in the Uxbridge end, in the slot to Dave Gainey, back to Justin Sheehey on the boards, back to Chris Jones and he scores! to give Port a 5-1 lead. Blayne Kinnunen ragged the puck with less than 4:00 to play and Jeff Neal was back on defence to dump it out and look after things in the Port Perry zone. With Uxbridge running out of time, Justin Sheehey caught Peterborough mens softball league looking for more teams The Peterborough Mens Soft- ball Association is looking to ex- panditsleague. It is presently a four-team league but the association would like to expand to eight teams. The league runs Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday even- ingsduring the summer.
