"A Family Tradition for 127 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, February 1,1994 - 11 H aving doctor saved his By Julia Dempsey Port Perry Star Having faith in his doctor saved Charles Clairmont's life. When told by doctors that he would need a quadruple bypass, Mr. Clairmont willingly put his lifein their hands. "I had three completely blocked arteries to my heart," he told the Star. "My other ar- tery was 90 per cent blocked." The surgery, performed in 1985, was a success and he has been able to lead a fairly active life since then. "Ifyoudon't have faith in your doctors, don't waste their time," Mr. Clairmont said, adding he believes it was the faith in his healers that helped him come through the surgery. Unfortunately, his father and his brother were not so fortu- nate. Both died of massive heart attacks. ~ "There are people who you might think are tough, but they are afraid of surgery," Mr. Clair- mont said. "But I say why risk your life. Have the surgery." He first noticed a problem with his health about 10 years ago. A life-long sufferer of mi- graine headaches, he became concerned when the headaches changed. "TI was getting all the symp- For Charles Clairmont toms but not the headaches," Mr. Clairmont said. The weird sensation came over him while out walking his dogs near the Nonquon River one day. He went back to his home in Port Perry and made an appointment for the following day to see his doctor. "If it hadn't been for our own Dr. Millar, Charles wouldn't be here today," his wife Aileen said. "We don't know how lucky we are to have the doctors and hospital like we have here." The first operation he under- went involved cleaning out a ca- rotid artery in his neck. The ar- tery, which takes blood to the brain, was badly clogged. The quadruple bypass opera- tion was performed the next year and a couple of years ago he had his other carotid artery cleaned out as a precaution. The surgeries have left him with sizable scars on his neck and chest, but Mr. Clairmont is not uncomfortable with them. "I'm healthy and I'm here. That's what's important," he said. Although he took a medical retirement from his job as a cus- todian at a Durham separate school, Mr. Clairmont still en- joys many of his old hobbies, in- cluding hunting and fishing. faith in family Charles Clairmont had quadruple bypass surgery in 1985.
