MPP goes to bat for employment centre A local MPP has gone to bat for a Port Perry-based employ- ment office. Gord Mills, Durham East's MPP, hand delivered a letter to Mike Farnan, Associate Minis- ter of Education and Training, on Monday, seeking the offi- cial's support in granting bro- kerage status to the employ- ment centre for a provincially- funded program. Scugog Employment Servic- es' manager Vonne Haigh had Camera, purse ' stolen from car A Lakeside Beach Road resi- dent reported to police on Sun- day, Jan. 23 that a number of items had been stolen from her vehicle. Missing are a camera, binocu- lars, purse, and a sizeable amount of American and Cana- dian money. There are no suspects in the been attempting to gain broker- age status to administer the jobsOntario Grant in Port Perry. It is currently under the jurisdiction of Durham College in Uxbridge. Although Scugog council re- cently threw its support behind the proposal recently, Durham Regional Social Services Com- mittee turned down the re- quest. In a meeting last week in Port Perry, Mr. Mills promised to support the service's request. "We need a brokerage in Port Perry, without it there will be a tremendous hardship for many of my constituents who have no jobs, no transport and very little hope left," the MPP wrote in the letter. Mr. Mills said the program was needed in the area to help offset the hardship created by the closure of a number of indus- tries in the past few years in- cluding Johnson Controls and Coca Cola Bottling in Uxbridge. & reply is expected shortly from the minister. 'Local musher Bruce Lang- maid placed second in a 50-mile race in Hillscroft, Pennsylvania on the weekend. But it was a bittersweet expe- rience for the Scugog-based competitar. Mr. Langmaid's day was marred with disappointment from the start as he was forced to race with only five dogs after one was unable to compete due to soreness. The day went from bad to worse after another one of his dogs pulled up lame early in the race, forcing him to complete, the mountainous course with just four dogs. Mr. Langmaid's time of 6:03 for the 50-mile course was enough for second place and the $400 in prize money. Despite capturing second place, Mr. Langmaid felt with a full team, he could have taken top prize. Although unhappy with his placing, Mr. Langmaid was more than pleased with the de- termination his team showed. "They put their heads down and worked hard," he said. Mr. Langmaid, who enjoys racing the longer endurance races, said he hopes to compete in his hometown next year if the longer races are included. An organization is planning to support races around Scugog Island in conjunction with the shorter races. (CQL.
