Last week, a document was delivered to the local media which outlined plans to consoli- date police services in 26 Divi- sion. | This report included closing the Port Perry and Uxbridge de- tachments and reducing the number of constables in the area. - It also suggested creating the position of Village Constables in < ~ some communities. "If we determine who is to blame, they'll be dealt with ac- cording to the law," Police Chief ing a Police Services meetingon Friday. Police came under attack by Durham's Chairman Gary Her- rema during the meeting. 'He demanded an explanation into the affair. "I have great concern about how this happened," he said. "I find this unacceptable." "To tell you that I am very up- setismild." Chairman Herrema accused the. police department of being negligent in letting the docu- ment get out, suggesting it was leaked internally by a member of Durham Regional Police. The chairman suggested there were political overtones involved. "This is unbelievable from a professional force," he said. Chief McCagherty accepted the full brunt of the chairman's rage. "I am very sorry that some- one, I can't believe that it's somebody from our police ser- vice, would take the report and photocopy it," the chief said. He referred to the perpetrator as "somebody with an evil na- ture who has breached a' 'trust among their fellow workers." Chief McCagherty. said the. leaked document, entitled "Po- licing: 26 Division, Organiza- tion and Deployment", was part of a much larger 700- -page re- port prepared by a task force looking at all aspects of the po- lice service. He said it was not official poli- cy, nor would anything of that magnitude be carried out with- out proper consultation. A report is expected to be pre- sented at the board's meeting next month concerning the leak. Canterbury Common and Honey Harbour projects ready to go By Scott Anderson Port Perry Star Ground will be broken shortly on atleast two residential devel- opments. Representatives from both Honey Harbour Heights and Canterbury Common appeared before Scugog Council on Mon- day pledging to begin projects as soon as weather permits. Mark Dawson, a representa- tive from Quorum Development Corporation, the builders for Canterbury Common, said his company 18 ready to procede with the construction of three model homes. He expects to begin as soon as the weather allows construction of the foundations. A series of information meet- ings for both the public and real estate brokers will also be held over the next 45 days. Canterbury Common 1s a 85-home recreational commu- nity located on the former Brooks Farms land at Simcoe Street and Reach Street. The units will be 1,330 to 1,450 square feet in size. Most will be two bedroom homes. Community amenities pro- posed include a nine-hole golf course, walking trails, cycling trails and clubhouse facilities. Although the developers had originally planned for a condo- minium-style development, the plans have been changed to freehold ownership and public roads. Mr. Dawson promised to sub- mit plans to council in one month's time for site plan ap- proval. Construction of a number of estate homes will also see a start this year. Rick Rondeau, from Honey Harbour Heights, said his com- pany intends to begin construc- tion of at least five of the 25 pro- posed homes just north of Port Perryinthespring. Organizers are thrilled by the response of both the racers and spectators, which are esti- 'mated to have exceeded 10,000 during the two-day event.
