Kinsmen Dave Goldberg was elated when The Port Perry Star spoke with him on Monday morning, saying the "mushers" have asked them to make the race an annual event. "They are planning to make the Port Perry race the major event of their season next year," he said. Mr. Goldberg said although there were few problems, organizers are concerned about the number of pets spectators brought to the race. Both organizers and racers did experience a few minor pro- blems on Saturday, but most "were corrected in time for the Sunday races. In fact, many of the racers praised the organization and conditions for racing on Sunday. Mr. Goldberg and Elgin Knopp of the Scugog Chamber of Commerce praised the media for their support of the event. The newspapers, radio and tele- vision stations all gave consid- erable coverage of the event. Both men also complimented the volunteers who helped and were quick to give credit and thanks to the following groups - Port Perry Cadets and Port Perry High School Outters Club who acted as course marshals, Port Perry Snowmobile Club who kept the course groomed and patrolled on the lake, North Shore Amateur Radio Club who monitored the racers and com- municated problems or con- cerns, Kinsmen Club and Scugog Chamber of Commerce for their organization of the event, Norm Tripp Contracting and Van Camp Contracting for track. oN: Jamie McQuaid, Billy Britt, Mary Britt preparation of the six-mile sled While visiting Port Perry, competitors attended a drivers dinner Saturday night at Trader Sams, a Sunday morn- ing breakfast meeting at Emiels Place and were supplied coffee and donuts by Country Style Donuts both days at the muni- cipal office. Mayor Howard Hall called the weekend a fantastic success and a great first effort. "It appears as if everyone was happy - the racers, the organiz- ers and the merchants," Mayor Hall said. Merchants do brisk business By Julia Dempsey Port Perry Star Local merchants are among the many who are singing the praises of the Snow Flake Festi- val. "They should do this every weekend," Phil McBride of The Galley Fish & Chips told the Star. "Our restaurant was packed both days over the week- end. I really appreciate the or- ganizers' efforts." As well as serving up meals, the restaurant did a brisk busi- nessin hot chocolate. "We ran out of hot chocolate," Mr. McBride said, adding a fam- ily friend brought them more from home. Business was also booming at an eatery on the other side of Queen Street. "We had a very busy week- end," said John Ross of The Meating Place. "The store was Jammed all the time." Mr. Ross said they will be bet- ter prepared for next year's fes- tival. The restaurant ran out of hot chocolate and sold all 300 Oktoberfest sausages. Next door at Nuts About Chocolate, sales were 50 per cent higher than usual for this time ofyear, said Ken Koury. The big sellers were individu- al chocolates and candy. "My hat's off to the organiz- e.s. I'hey did a terrific job," Mr. Koury said. The brisk weather meant brisk business for Brock's De- partment Store. "There was a strong demand for outdoor wear," said Marina Brock, adding sales of hats, gloves, and scarves were heavy. "We usually can't give it (win- ter stock) away at this time of year (because people already have theseitems)," she said. Native Perspectives also did quite well, said Valerie Larocca. Husky dog figurines, igloo sculptures, fur hats, moccasins, sweatshirts and mugs were the topsellers. A representative from Gord Lewis Motor Sales on Water Street said snowmobile and au- tomobile traffic was extremely heavy at their gas pumps over the weekend, as well.
