"I see an opportunity for Can- ada and certainly Durham can play a role in it," Durham MP Alex Shepherd told the Port Perry Star last week. Mr. Shepherd, along with a number of Ontario Caucus members, met with representa- tives from China's Consulate GeneralonJanuary 11. "Durham businesses are overlooking millions of dollars in trade opportunities with Pa- cific Rim countries," he said. According to Mr. Shepherd, the Chinese delegation "ex- pressed interest in Durham's agricultural, manufacturing and trainingexpertise." Of particular interest was Durham's pork, dairy cattle and manufactured goods such as truck trailers, assistance with hospital construction and train- Ing assistance in the areas ofac- counting and management. Mr. Shepherd believes Dur- ham can play a major role in in- creasing exports to China in the agricultural sector. He noted Durham could ex- port its dairy cattle and hogs. And Scugog could play a part in this as a number of producers are involved with these prod- uctsinthearea. "It's an excellent opportunity to take advantage of," he said. Although he couldn't attach a dollar figure to the market, he noted the potential for success was great. At the present time there is $4.5 billion in bi-lateral trade between Canada and China, most of which is wheat sales. But Fan Yanjun, a consul with the Consulate General of the People's Republic of China, indicated China would like to increase this amount by import- ing technological and agricultu- ral goods from Durham Region. "Mr. Yanjun expressed inter- est in Durham's agricultural, manufacturing and training ex- pertise," Mr. Shepherd said. A trade junket to China is scheduled for May and Mr. Shepherd is seeking to have some area farmers included in this delegation. Although uncertain whether he will be going to the conven- tion, he will work to ensure some area representation is present.
