Cold temperatures cause a number of serious problems By Kelly Lown Port Perry Star Record-breaking tempera- tures caused an abundance of problems for Scugog Township residents and kept emergency crews busy all weekend. Many residents experienced problems with frozen water pipes, interrupted cable service "and hydro blackouts. Scugog Fire Department was kept busy responding to nine calls between Sunday, Jan. 16 and Monday, Jan. 17, the most serious being a snowmobile ac- cident on Lake Scugog that sent one woman to hospital with seri- ousinjuries. According to Durham Region- al Police, Kim Chevallier, of Whitby was driving her 1991 Polaris southbound on Lake Scugog when it struck an abut- ment at the edge of the lake in the area behind Candell's River- boat. The impact sent the Whit- by woman airborn before com- ing torest under a truck. Police say the woman, who is in her late 20s, was transported by ambulance to Community Memorial Hospital and later transferred to Toronto Western Hospital, where she remains in critical condition as of press time. Other fire department re- OFF Small to 4X » 28 to 48 Waist sponses included the crews be- ing called to the senior's resi- dence on Rosa Street twice, once for a broken water pipe and lat- er when the sprinkler system was activated. Chief Steele said the building received extensive damage. The cold weather also caused one chimey fire on Honey's Beach, an electrical fire on Al- dred Drive and one in Utica, a car fire in Prince Albert and a water pipe problem at R.H. Cor- nish Public Scholl. A series of problems at the lo- cal school forced the principal to evacuate the school. According to principal Rick DeJong, a water pipe burst in the school which caused exten- sive flooding. The flooding even- tually caused the boiler to burn out and created further prob- lems with the transformer. By 9 a.m. the principal said they had no choice but to send the pupils home as there was no heat, hy- dro or telephone service in the building. But, he added, crews have been working on the transform- er, and he fully expects work to be complete and the damage re- paired, allowing the students to return to school today (Tues- day). 241 QUEEN ST., PORT PERRY 985-1965 LTR alk AR RB Rs ara
