PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, January 18,1994 - 27 "A Family Tradition for 127 Years" ET Betty Hockins (nee En- wright) in her 69th year, passed away on December 20, 1993 at her home in Port Perry after a courageous battle against can- cer. Betty was born in Strathroy, Ontario and was the eldest daughter of the late Thomas and Shirley Enwright. She at- tended Strathroy Public School. In 1939 Betty and her family moved to Newcastle, Ontario where she attended high school. Students prepare for exams at PPHS by Mindi Yake Christmas is over and done with in just a few days, but when the students came back to school everyone felt as though Christmas was back. The ex- citement of being back and sharing Christmas happiness radiated from the student body like Christmas lights. Everyone was back in the spirit, even the teachers. (But we'd never tell them that). Ithink New Year's Eve was a different story all on its own. New Year's Eve was a night to forget all your problems from 1993 and to think about all the happiness 1994 is going to bring. "Happy New Year PortPerry!!! Just when we thought we might get away with a bit more celebrating we learn it's time to buckle up and study because it's exam time! All the students are going their own way. Some of them are starting to panic and others are thinking "exams are weeks away; that's lots of time." The Grade 9s are still trying to decide whether they can pass their exams and some people are wondering if they are going to have a free summer holiday or if they are going to be spend- ing summer in school. OAC students are excited that this might determine what college or university they will be going to. Exams count for 20 per cent of our mark and I must agree with most people, that four exams are better than eight. I think mostly all our stu- dent body likes the semesters. This month is going to be full of expectations and hopes. Good luck everyone and remember: just do the best you can! In 1944 Betty was class vale- dictorian and won the Wilmot medal for High Proficiency. On November 10, 1945 she married Harold O. Hockins. They resided in Bowmanville and Newcastle before moving to Port Perry in 195665. Betty and Harold had two children, Shirley (Mrs. Peter De 'Haas) and Tom (wife Lyn). Betty was predeceased by her parents and younger brother Wilfred (Buck). She is survived by her husband Harold, daugh- ter Shirley, son Tom and six grandchildren, Steve, Kimber, Terry, Clint, Tina, Jessica and one great-grandson Eric and her sisters Marilyn Walton, Do- reen KEmbley and Connie Little. The funeral service was held December 23 at Morris Funeral Chapel in Bowmanville, Onta- rio and was officiated by Rever- end Donald Stiles. Interment at Bond Head Ce- metery, Newcastle, Ontario.
