Robbie Burns supper Jan. 21 Florence Ashton This cold weather snap seems to be lingering with us, doesn't it? One of these days soon, we hope, we can look forward to moderating temperatures. Guess the cold weather was responsible for the handful of people that turned out for the card party on Thursday night. When I say handful it was just that, five people turned up, so ! guess it wasn't long before they headed back to the warmth of their homes. Maybe everybody will be thawed out in time for the next euchre on Jan. 20. The Eleanor Knight Group of the WMS met at the home of Lois Daw last Wednesday after- noon with president Ruth Ol- ver chairing the meeting. Ruth called the meeting to order with a call to worship. Bernice Gard- ner was in charge of the wor- ship service. We sang the hymn "Standing at the Portal". Scrip- ture was read from Exodus 13, vs. 17-22. Bernice's Meditation was titled "God's Protecting 4-H leader needed for group What cold weather we have been having with lots of snowy days thrown in. Is this what could be considered an "old fashioned winter?" On Saturday a beautiful wed- ding took place when Valerie Van Camp became the bride of Ron Linton at the Blackstock United Charch. The reception and dance took place at the Blackstock Recreation Centre. Best wishes from the communi- ty are extended to Valerie and Ron. Marie and Bob Attfield, Ja- mie, Mark and Scott of Vancou- ver are visiting her father Mer- rill and Jean Van Camp and were part of her sister's wed- dingon Saturday. Tony and Margaret Duives- tyn are looking very pleased these days with the arrival of their first granddaughter Dana Elizabeth was born to Karen and Hugh Goodacre in Newfoundland. Leanne Lang and Erin, Lynn Wager, Taryn and Kurtis en- Joyed seeing "Disney on Ice" at the SkyDome on Saturday. At the Blackstock United Church Rebecca Lee Slute, daughter of Sherry and Leon Slute, was batpized at the morning service. Following church Marie and Ross Tysick hosted a gathering in honor of their granddaugh- ter's baptism. Guests were Sherry and Leon, Justin and Rebecca, Doris Slute, Linda Powell of Columbus, Jan and Keith Fraser and family, Port Perry, Don Slute, Raglan, San- Organizers thankful for success of toy/food drive Durham Regional Police re- port the 1993 Fifth Annual Christmas Food and Toy Drive was an exceptional success. In total, over 100 plus full van loads of toys and food were col- lected throughout the Region, gervicing over 16 agencies re- questing our assistance this year. Every agency received enough food and toys to fill their list of families requiring food and toy baskets so that not one family that had contacted an agency went without. Food and toys continued to pour in Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, and even Boxing Day! Durham Police Services thanks everyone involved, the volunteers, sponsors, people and businesses in the communi- ties of Durham Region and to the agencies who sorted and distributed the food and toys. There were 10 tables at the weekly euchre party on Tues- day evening with the following winners - Carl Ferguson, Ruby Smith, Mary Poots, Dorothy Archer, Nerta Masters. Thomas Manns, Betsy Staniland. Lucky draws were won by Bernice Renton, Charlie Stapleton, Charlie Campbell, Faith Law- rence, Eileen Warder, Norman Rohrer. In the evening of Jan. 13 there will be a special meeting of the fair board when a discus- sion regarding the proposed changes to the fairgrounds will be held. It is very important that all members attend to give theirinput to this important de- cision. This year the annual meeting of the Agricultural So- ciety will take the form of a pot luck dinner followed by the business section after which will be a dance. Cost of the dance which is open to the pub- lic will be $5/person if you have not attended the dinner and meeting. This appreciation night will be held at the Rec. Centre on Saturday, Jan. 22. Lois Daw shared with us a story from St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Toronto. Last winter, the church opened its doors to the homeless and needy of down- town Toronto. The next meeting will be held at the home of Ruth Oliver. The Ladies' Bible Class will meet at the home of Florence Ashton on Tuesday of this week at 2:30 p.m. Keep in mind the congrega- tional meeting at Burns Church on Feb. 6, following morning worship. On Friday, Jan. 21, 1s the Robbie Burns Supper in the Church hall. If you would like a ticket, they are available in the Church office and from Bert Carr. In a few short weeks, there will be another Gospel Music Concert held at Burns Church. The Singing Hills from Nipaw- in, Saskatchewan, will be on tour in Ontario and will be "In concert" at Burns on Sunday, Feb. 13 at 7:30 p.m. The Sing- ing Hills are a family group, Roger and Patti and their three daughters Kelli, Kim and Cor- rie, who are TV and recording artists, whose rich harmony and lively enthusiasm have made them gospel music favor- ites all across the country. The choir sang "Je- sus, Jesus, Kill us with Your Love." Next Sunday is Presbytery Sunday. The annual congregational meeting will be on Tuesday, Jan. 18 at 8 p.m. at the church. Arnold and Gail Kerry spent the last two weeks in Zephyr- hills, Florida. What a time to come home to this sub-zero weather. Johanna Urech has been in the Detroit area where she wel- comed a new granddaughter into the world. Congratulations to her and to Jane Sobil who has her first niece, at least on her side of the family. Congratulations to Dick and Marie Geer on the arrival of an- other granddaughter on Sun- day evening, Jan. 9. This is the second daughter for Randy and Carolyn Geer and a wee sister for Chelsea.
