Mr. Ward, also known as Avian Ron, is pictured with two of the exotic birds. See story. "Waktged our own now," Mr. Ward sat "The toughest thing to get right was their diet." The birds eat "people food" he) said. And plenty of it! The Wards spend about $400 on nuts, $180 on fruits and vege- tables, $60 on beans and $120 on baby formula each month for the birds. Mrs. Ward's day begins at 3 a.m. when she starts preparing the first of the birds' two meals. Things are especially hectic if they are caring for babies. The babies are fed hourly until they are two weeks old. Then they are fed about five times a day for the next 12 weeks. The Wards take the birds out of their cages three times a day so they can fly around the house. The birds are released between 7:30-8:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m.to2p.m., and 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. This "free-flying" time helps them develop socially, Mr. Ward said. - "We do sell them (the birds) but we are awfully particular," he said. "I'll spend any amount of time with those who want to learn (the proper techniques) but many don't. You don't just walkin here and buy a bird." And ifthe first question out of a prospective buyer's mouth is about cost, the person is asked toleave, Mr. Ward said. He 1s presently putting to- . gether two packages. The Rolls Royce is $3,950 and includes a custom-made cage, playbar and the customer's choice of McCaw. Wards are passionate about their birds The Honda package is $2,625 and includes a custom-made cage and choice of McCaw.
