We have been distributing copies of an important pamph- let from the Union of Concerned Scientists to all Durham Region Councillors, MP's and MPP's, schools, and media outlets. The Union of Concerned Sci- entists is a group that formed in the U.S. in 1969 to advance re- sponsible public policies in are- as where technology plays a critical role. A year ago now, they sent out the "World Scien- tists' Warning to Humanity" to all world leaders. It is signifi- cant to note that their warning was endorsed by 1,670 scien- Replying to Letter To the Editor: This is in reply to the com- ment of Suzanne Neal, Oshawa, dated Nov. 16. Who entertained you? We did school work and chores and on cold evenings we played Chinese checkers or oth- er games. We went to the local swimming hole, the sandlot for baseball and the home-made ice rink. What became of Scouts and Guides? Try to find a young tists, including 104 Nobel lau- reates. The warning says, among other things, that "Human be- ings and the natural world are on a collision course... If not checked, many of our current practices put at serious risk the future that we wish for human society and the plant and ani- mal kingdoms... Fundamental changes are urgent if we are to avoid the collision our present course will bring about... No more than one or a few decades remain before the chance to avert the threats we now con- front will be lost and the pros- pects for humanity immeasura- bly diminished". Further reading of the U.C.S. warning pamphlet notes that all sectors of society must be- comments person to cut your grass or shov- el your snow. This means you and me! Al- though there has been a tenden- cy lately, perhaps encouraged by the media, to act as though environmental problems have simply disappeared, nothing could be further from the truth! DEN members working on this project are hopeful that wide distribution of the Union of Concerned Scientists' warn- ing pamphlet will convince peo- ple who have continued to view environmentalists as just a bunch of hysterical nay-sayers, that it may be time to do some re-thinking. There have been some bits of progress made, but we continue to face a daunting number of extremely serious environmental problems. Isn't it time we all woke up and smelled the coffee? People who are interested in having a copy of the UCS pamphlet or in finding out what environmental groups in Dur- ham are up to, are welcome to give me a call (985-3225).
