"A Family Tradition for 127 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, November 23,1993 - 9 Crime rate down across the region By Scott Anderson Port Perry Star Durham's police chief says a more community minded ap- proach has aided in decreasing the crime rate across the region. For the first nine months of this year, the number of service calls to Durham Regional Police dropped seven per cent com- pared to the same period last year. According to the yearly ac- tivity report, police have re- ceived 110,136 calls for service from January to September, this is down from the 118,423 for the same period in 1992. _ Adecrease was seen in all ma- Jor areas. Crimes against per- sons dropped 10.4 per cent, crimes against property fell 11.1 per cent, criminal code driving offences dropped 26.3 per cent, while motor vehicle ac- cidents declined 0.6 per cent. Durham's Police Chief Trevor McCagherty attributes the drop in crime in the past few years to the role officers have taken in the community. According to Chief McCagherty, the officers are now working more closely in the communities which they have identified as high incident areas and are showing a more visible presence. Through community involve- ment the officers are now work- ing closely in the areas to cut down on the rate of crime. This community involvement in- cludes walking the beat and bi- cycle patrols to organizing activ- ities such as sports. "We're solving more problems ahead of time instead of having people phone," he said. It is no different in 26 Divi- sion (Scugog, Uxbridge and Brock Townships) as this area has also experienced a marked drop in calls for service and crime. The calls for service dropped to 7,687 for the first nine months of this year, down from 8,411 calls for the same period in 1992. Criminal code driving offences were also down from 2,870 last year to 2,115 for the same peri- od in 1993. The same was not the case with motor vehicle acci- dents. While across the region there was a slight decrease, in 26 Division the number rose. There were 643 reported motor vehicle accidents from January to September, this is up from the 588 accidents reported for the same period last year. Despite the overall decline in incidents this year and in the past few years, Chief McCagh- erty cautions that these num- bers are deceiving. He notes that although there has been a pattern of reduction in inci- dents in the past few years, the numbers have climbed by 25 per cent as compared to 1988. He noted particularly that 1988 to 1990 saw a huge jump in crime. Although the numbers may be declining, they cannot be compared to the low figures seen before 1988.
