Canada's wellness store for peaple who matter MEDICHAIR, from people who care To the Editor: It is time for politicians to tell the truth about Medicare. Who are we to believe? The three "old" mainstream politi- cal parties would have us be- lieve that we have universality in our Medicare system. They would have us believe that we have equal access to equal ser- vice anywhere in Canada. Recent letters to the editor in the Toronto Star would indicate that the politicians are not tell- ing it like it really is. Some of the points mentioned by Ste- phen J. Stern, an M.D. from Ajax include the following: "Medicare in Canada is a four tier system." Tier one, the aver- age Canadian. Tier two, those who know somebody in the sys- tem who help them jump the que in seeing a specialist. Tier three, those who can afford to travel to the US and skip the lines altogether, and tier four is the politicians themselves who have access to the armed forces hospital in Ottawa. Dr. Stern also writes that On- tario already has "user fees of a sort for 'non-essential' medical examinations" and "OHIP will reimburse physicians treating patients from all provinces ex- cept Quebec." I am sure we all know some- one with a story to tell, such as Todd Kasenberg from Sudbury in a letter to the Toronto Star Editor. Mr. Kassenberg on the existing "multi-levelled" sys- tem writes "Northern Ontari- ans have to travel to Toronto for MRI scans. In Sudbury, a se- vere shortage of orthopedic sur- Letters to the editor Time for truth about Medicare geons has resulted in people, suffering the extreme pain of fractures, being flown by heli- copter to Timmins or, Toronto for treatment."
