"A Family Tradition for 127 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, October 19,1993 - 7 Letters to the editor Don't approve of 1-976 listings in paper To the Editor: This letter is regarding the advertising of 1-976 phone numbers in the Port Perry Star. I don't think that there are very many people that honestly believe that these numbers are provided for the sole purpose of "chatting" with someone. At $1 per minute, 10 minutes mini- mum, they are provided for more than just chatting. I myself have seen the com- mercials on late night TV because they are repeated con- stantly, and find them not only disgusting, but degrading to Thanks to bingo players To the Editor: I would like to say thank you to all the people who gave dona- tions to the Benefit Bingo and to all the people who so generously gave prizes towards the bingo for the Community Nursing Home. Also thank you to Mari- on Club for donating the bingo equipment and a special thanks to Karen Reid for calling the bingo that evening. Thanks to all the bingo players who came out and sup- ported this event. Provincial Traffic Signs; Port Perry IGA; Ray's Towing; Valu- Mart; Taylor's Insurance; H & R Block; Emmerson's Insu- rance; Galley Fish and Seafood; Bill Clement; Square Boy Pizza; Ernest Cawker; Hank's Pas- tries; Doug Healey; Books Ga- lore; Lloyd Parish; Home Hard- ware and Bill Barr. Now I will focus on the Red Barn and Wednesday Night Bingo and the Port Perry Mo- Jacks. Yours truly, Pierre Leduc Letters are powerful To the Editor: My letter last September con- cerning the improper spare tire that came with my car caused quite a stir! General Motors called (three different people) to tell me that I most certainly was entitled to a replacement rim for my spare tire and would get one. Ontario Motor Sales called to let me know they were getting my rim and would call when it was ready. When I went to pick up my rim, I received polite and courteous service and an expla- nation of why things happened the way they did. I now have a spare tire which fits my car. Hopefully I'll never need it. Never underestimate the power of a letter in the Port Perry Star. It may be a small town newspaper, but it is obvi- ously widely read, and there's no telling what results may oc- cur. Tim Lang, Blackstock Shortsighted philosophy From Page 6 cutting of the rainforests is a national disgrace and the pro- testors instead of being convict- ed criminals they should be con- - sidered national heroes. Macmillan Bloedel, the log- ging company that is doing the cutting in the rainforest of Van- couver Island, is the real crimi- nal involved in this case. His reasoning is fuelled by money and tempered by greed. The shortsightedness of this philos- ophy will be reflected by the barren hills of the island for many generations. Sincerely, Tyler S. Briley, Port Perry Get out and vote To the Editor: It has been said - Politicians are the only acrobats who can open their mouth and put their foot in it while straddling a fence. And itis a fact - A person can- not go anywhere while they are straddling a fence. Just a thought - Must be ter- rible to go to dinner with mem- bers of any parliament. It takes ORT PERRY auto glass & trim n., them so long to pass anything. I heard the world may come to an end on Sunday, Oct. 24, so I cast my vote at the advance poll on Saturday, Oct. 16. My Vote Has Been Cast! If you have read this far, I now have your attention. So Get Out and Vote! Maybe you think it is alright to run these ads, but I'm sure that the parents with expensive phone bills will disagree. I believe in the freedom of speech and the freedom of the press, but do you feel this choice of advertising was a wise one? I'm glad that my child is too young to feel the need to see what "live fantasies" are, but I feel sorry for the parents who are going to have to explain the numbers and what they are to their kids. I'm truly disappointed in your decision and will find it hard to look forward to the Port Perry Star if this is what I have to look forward to.
