Andy was a very well- respected senior student at Cartwright High School. Sym- pathy is extended to his par- ents, Bernice and Brian Avis and to John, Andy's older broth- er who lives on Sunrise Drive. Cartwright Central Public School was honored to be the grand winner of "Hey, We're Looking Good" competition for the schools of Durham Board of Education. It involves the ap- pearance of the school flower beds and front grounds during the summer. Winning this prize 1s indeed a great honor. Con- gratulations! Speaking of honors, five young ladies and their parents certainly had the honor of meet- ing Prince Philip last Tuesday when he presented Gold Duke of Edinborough medals to over 70 young people at the Royal York. Those from this ares were Jennifer Byers with her parents Jim and Barb Byers, Lisa Gil- bank with her parents Judy and Carl Gilbank, Sharlene Kyte with her parents Nancy and Floyd Kyte of Port Perry, Stacey Swain with her parents Don and Louise Swain and Jill Van Camp with her mom and dad Richard and Ruby Van Camp. Also attending were their lead- ers, Jessie Gunter and Shirley Turner. Another Gold award applicant who had gone chrough the Cartwright pro- gram, Michael St. John of Oshawa, also received his award on Tuesday. Congratula- tions to you all. Nancy Bryans, Patti Alpe and Jean Mountford (Bob's sister) of Oshawa called at the funeral home and Nancy and Bob at- tended the service at Kirkfield of Florence Bryans, wife of Bob and Jean's cousin Bud (Clar- ence) Bryans of Kirkfield. Congratulations to Ralph and Peggy Larmer who celebrated 'their 45th wedding anniversary on Saturday. On Thanksgiving Saturday their family took them out to dinner and then gathered at the home of David and Ingrid Larmer and family for a gathering. Those attend- ing were Sharon Goulding, Heather and Daryl; Dave and Ingrid Larmer, Robert and Ste- ven all of Blackstock; John Larmer and his friend Donna of Uxbridge; Paul and Margaret Larmer of Guelph. Paul and Margaret's little girl Katherine was at the family gathering fol- lowing dinner. Congratula- tions, Ralph and Peggy. Congratulations to Owen and Ora Reader of Shady Acres, Scugog Point who celebrated their 60th anniversary with an open house at the Rec Centre Sunday afternoon. Patti and Rick Alpe, Nathan and Emma spent Thanksgiving Sunday with Carmela and Ar- turo Alpe and family at Guelph. Alison Olson of Gimli, Mani- toba spent last week with Ge- rald and Joyce Kelly. Elizabeth Peeters, Courtney and Kathryn of Omemee also spent a few days in Blackstock while her husband Peter attended a con- ference. A large number of friends at- tended the Open House in hon- ~ or of bride-to-be Kathy Paisley and her fiance Mike Miller on Sunday afternoon at the C.E. room of the United Church. Donna Kyte showed a video she had made of their growing up years and their time since they met. A lovely tea table and dainty lunch was enjoyed. Ka- thy and Mike were presented with a gift of money. Another Open House will be held in honor of bride-to-be Valerie Van Camp and her fi- ~ ance Tom Linto on Sunday, Nov. 14. On Saturday morning, Susan Saywell hosted a Van Camp family shower in honor of Vale- rie Van Camp at her home in Oshawa. After Valerie opened her many lovely gifts, she gra- ciously thanked all the ladies present. A delicious buffet luncheon followed the shower. An enjoyable dinner was held on Thanksgiving at Jean Mountford"s home in Oshawa when Nancy and Bob Bryans attended. There were 10 tables at the weekly card party with the fol- lowing winners: Carl Gimblett, Dorothy Archer, Margaret Fin- ney, Andy Munroe, Pat Porrill, Harry Hill and Ruby Smith. Lucky draws were won by Har- ry Hill, Richard Manns, Ruby Cochrane, John Archer and Jean Slemon. UCW Afternoon Unit by Dora Martyn Twelve ladies met at Thelma Wright's home. Thelma opened the meeting by welcoming all and thanked the lunch commit- tee for a delicious dessert. Ai- leen Byers conducted the wor- ship service using the book "Mary and Martha's World". Roll call was to name a flower beginning with your initial. Business meeting included reminders of regional meetings - Kirby on Oct. 26 at 6 p.m. and Ajax Oct. 28 at 12:30, the Trac- tor Puller's Dinner on Nov. 13 and a birthday party at the Vil- laon Nov. 23. Audrey Wright conducted an interesting program based on Attention all expectant par- ents and grandparents! Please come to a free open house at the Port Perry Hospital Library, Wednesday, Oct. 20, 1993, 7-9 p.m. Displays and information re- garding pregnancy, labor and birth and breast feeding will be available. Plans of the new la- bor, delivery, recovery and post partum rooms will be on dis- play. School wins competition the questions asked the con- testants in the popularity con- test. One question was "If we could change anything in our life what would it be?" As we all thought it was too late to change now, we felt we had all done the best with what we had. Homecraft members of the Fair Board are reminded of the planning meeting at the home of Joyce Kelly on Tuesday, Oct. 19 at 7 p.m. Also, a reminder of the District 4 meeting on Thursday, Oct. 21 at Lindsay. Conven- tion in Toronto Oct. 22, 23. The W.I has been asked to quilt a queensized quilt before Christ- mas. Plans were made for the Fun Fair which was held in Nestleton on Oct. 14 and for the W_I. prize for Commencement. The ladies enjoyed playing bingo as directed by Pat Sleep. Meeting closed with Oh Cana- da. . Blackstock 4-H Drama Club by Sara Brown For those of you who aren't in 4-H, you don't know what you are missing. On Oct. 12, we started our meeting by discuss- ing a lot of business and then did an interesting tough cross- word. Next we had to work on our plays because we won't have much time to practice them. We all did really well when we played two of Kim's games. The meeting ended with a tasty lunch. On Oct. 17, we went to the Port Perry Town Hall to see a rehearsal of "Harvey". We learned all about the people in- volved in plays and what they do. After that the actors started rehearsing scene three, it was very interesting. We met some of the actors that we will see when we go to the performance on opening night. At 7:45 we said thank you and left. Hospital open house This is also an opportunity for you to meet the Certified Child- birth Educators, Sandra Carri- er R.N. and Alice Lee R.N. who are teaching classes in Lamaze Prepared Childbirth. Double fatality in Uxbridge A three-car accident on Octo- ber 17 resulted in the death of two people including a 17-year- old Uxbridge girl. Michelle Bowman, 17, of Ux- bridge, and Mary Threapleton, 62, of Toronto, were killed in a traffic accident at Davis Drive and Regional Road 1 in Ux- bridge. The accident occurred at approximately 1:30 p.m. According to Durham Region- al Police, a vehicle travelling westbound on Davis Drive en- tered the intersection and was struck by a southbound vehicle. It then richocheted into a north- bound vehicle striking it head- on. Fire and ambulance respond- ed to the scene, where the crews were required to extricate three people from the vehicles. A number of the passengers and drivers received varying de- grees ofinjuries. No charges will be laid. Ken Brose, from Greenbank, demonstrated the art of rope making during the Business Improvement Area's Harvest Home in Port Perry on the weekend.
