"A Family Tradition for 127 Years" Aw gd: CN SI TO aR EE Fasil: TE The Bethesda-Reach JEN Nia munity of Bethesda at the original site of the Bethesda Women's Institute erected a sign on Thursday, Oct. 14 in the com- United Church (1882-1954) and Reach Township School #10 (1876-1963). Although the two buildings -- which were the hub of the community -- are no longer there, the W. |. felt it was important that a historical marker be placed at the site as a reminder ot the community's heritage. Pictured with members of the Bethesda-Reach W. I. are Aileen Dobson, a former teacher at the Reach school, Ralph Veitch, a former student, and Scugog Mayor Howard Hall. Please see story for details. Women's Institute erects historical sign 'By Corinne Croxall Throughout Ontario there are tiny hamlets which, in an earlier stage of rural develop- ment, were important home communities -- places where neighbors helped and support- ed neighbors, and where the so- cial life revolved around little red schoolhouses and churches with landmark steeples. Many of these communities are identi- fied today only in the minds of a few older residents and former neighbors scattered across the "country. Just west of Port Perry, at the four corners of Marsh Hill Road and Scugog 9th Line, there stood a school, S.S. 10 Reach, built in 1876, and Bethesda United Church, built in 1882 and part of the Epsom, Utica and Bethesda three-point charge. These buildings were the hub of the community of Be- thesda. Bethesda-Reach Branch of the Women's Institute was or- ganized in 1956 after the church closed. The motto of Women's Institutes "For Home and Country" suited the spirit of the Bethesda women who wanted to contribute to the ru- ral area of which they were a part. On Thursday, Oct. 14, this sign was erected across from the original site of the church and school. It is hoped that in- terested present and former residents will look, admire and recapture some of the spirit of days gone by. The organization is grateful . to Mr. Robbie Sprules who con- tributed the fine design.
