We would like to extend our thanks to them. The presentation put some hard facts on the table: *The Scugog Memorial Li- brary collection is far below the minimum provincial standard with 1.6 items per capita in- stead of 2.5 *To reach this level, $150,000 would be needed today. *We rank third from last in collection size and municipal support when compared to oth- er libraries serving similar and even smaller communities. *The library has been chroni- cally underfunded for years. *At current funding levels, the collection will continue to shrink, rather than grow. Your readers might be inter- ested in some additional infor- mation. The schools are depend- ing more and more on the library because of provincial cutbacks for education. At cur- rent collection levels, it is diffi- cult, if not impossible, to help in any meaningful way. At a time when the economy . is undergoing -drastic change, when global* competition a open borders mean skills opment is vital to our su at a time .whekR the unem need retrdiningto find woik, we are faced 'with 'a declining li- brary. Surely, this is a périod, instead, when the library should be supported to .a fnuch greater extent so it could be- come a key information centre for literacy, training and re- training. Times are tough, no doubt. Provincial cutbacks, federal transfer payment problems and a justifiable hostility to tax in- - creases do not create a receptive climate for additional funding. However, it might be less a question of tax increases and more one of priorities and possi- bly of allocation. The real issue is whether the books and instructional videos. Or would we prefer to let this in- stitution fall even further be- hind? As a nation, we have become far too dependent on govern- ment to solve our problems. It might be far preferable, and far more probable, for the people of Scugog Township -- individuals, service clubs, businesses and youth groups -- to help us all build a better library. In our view, the Scugog Me- morial Library is a very impor- tant to the people of the town- ship, and use is growing substantially year by year. Book circulation, for example, increased 20 per cent this year alone. With even a minimum level of support -- from any source -- it could become even more important; it could be- come the valuable, healthy, cen- tral institution itis meant to be. Yours sincerely, The Scugog Memorial Library Board Letters to the Editor policy on candidate endorsements It has long been the policy of the Port Perry Star not to accept or publish Letters to the Editor of a political nature during the final week of an election campaign. For the past four weeks the Port Perry Star has provided a large amount of space for each of the candidates to present their platforms and concerns about the future of this country. The space has been provided been published. free of charge and has been used by each of the parties. This week the Star received a number of letters, endorsing or critical of candidates/parties running in the October 25 federal election. We're sorry, but they have not It is our belief that a letter writing campaign by any of the parties in the final week of the campaign could give one candidate an unfair advantage over the others.
