The coaching staff for this year's team con- sists of: Dave Barkey, Carl Fitz- gerald, and Paul Wylie. Putting aside the fact that this game represented only the second time that most of the players have been on the ice skating, Port clearly dominated the en- tire match. The game started off with lots of tight checking and few chanc- es taken by either team. The game remained scoreless until early into the second period when Steve Styles scored Port's first goal of the season, with as- sists going to Blair Prechitko and Derek Buller. Seconds lat- er, Uxbridge tied the game up with an unassisted goal by Ke- vin Lunny. By the end of their second period, Port had clearly outhustled and outplayed their opponents, heading to the dressing room with a well- earned 3-1 lead; goals going to Darrell Vanderligt and Steve Desautels. The assists went to Craig Leask and Darrin Hope. The third period saw a wide open style of play, with both leams constantly changing on the fly. It was obvious that players on both teams were slightly out of shape. Uxbridge managed to score a pair during the third period, closing the gap at one point to within a goal. Both goals were notched by Blair Cook; assists going to Lunny, Darrin Zeller, Jody In- Techstar Bantams begin season Techstar Bantams got their first taste of pre-season hockey in an exhibition game against the Oshawa Red Wings. Starting things off for the Techstar Bantams was Danny Robinson scoring on a pass from Paul Shrigley. Techstar scored again as Aaron Levy and Matt Blowe assisted Gavin Baxter. To end the first period Aaron Levy scored giving Port a 3-2 lead. : The second period saw Oshawa and Port trade goals with Robert Gracie scoring un- assisted. The score tied at 4-4 made for an interesting fast paced third period but unfortunately no goals scored by either teams. With some great end to end hockey, the game ended in a 4-4 tie. On Friday, Oct. 1 Techstar Bantams travelled to Uxbridge to play another exhibition game. The first period saw end to end hockey while Port dominat- ed most of the play. Shane Nor- ten, Robert Gracie, Aaron Levy and Matt Blowe scored in the first period. Assists went to Ashley Van Shelven, Gavin Baxter and Bob Cracknell. The second period began with Port still on a tear as it paid off with Shane Norton scoring, as- sisted by Matt Blowe. Uxbridge seemed to come to life, but between Ports defense- men and great netminding they were stumped. The net minding was shared by Doug Short and John Babcock. Both worked hard to maintain the shutout. Nice work! On Oct. 3 Techstar paid Man- vers a visit. For this game they met a quick moving and hard hitting Manvers team. It was evident from the drop of the puck that the Manvers boys were more than ready to play hockey, with the only goal scored in the first period. In the second period Port picked up their game scoring two goals from Gavin Baxter and Shane Norton, assisted by Ryan Puckrin, Matt Blowe and Brad Shanley. In the final period Manvers scored with only minutes off the clock. Port was not about to roll over as they plugged away and were soon back in the game as Shane Norton scored with Matt Blowe assisting. From here on, it was wide open hockey with lots of end to end action and ex- cellent goal tending at both ends. Port made a valiant effort but were denied as they ran out of time. The net minding was shared by Doug Short and John Babcock. The game ended 3-3. On Oct. 6 the Techstar Ban- tam Bs hosted Uxbridge, in what turned out to be a 8-0 shutout for the Techstars. The Techstars dominated all facets of the game. Opening the scoring for the Techstars was the team captain Shane Norton. Port maintained pressure from start to finish, never allowing Uxbridge to counter attack. Goals scored for Techstar were provided by Robert Gracie and Matt Blowe with singles, while Shane Norton and Matt Philps both had hat tricks. As- sists were provided by Todd Parry, Ryan Puckrin, Gavin Baxter, Bob Cracknell. Jamie Trick and Doug Short shared the net minding, both worked hard for the shutout to stone Uxbridge 8-0 - great job! Port Perry's Techstar Ban- tams will host Lindsay on Oct. 20 for their first game of the reg- ular season. Instead, Port picked the level of play up. By the time the final buzzer sound-. ed, Port had walked away with the game, scoring four goals in the last half of the third period. At 11:07 of the third, Vanderligt sparked the onslaught with the winning goal; unassisted. Add- ed insurance came from Leask with Darrin Hope and Scott Wy- lie drawing assists. Vanderligt capped off his hat trick with only a few minutes remaining; assists going to Wylie and An- drew Pereman. Port's seventh, and final goal, went to Styles who was set up by Pereman and Darrell Vander Slagt. The entire team, with hardly a single practice so far this year, managed to play extreme- ly well as a team. Special men- tion goes to the entire defence core, who managed to keep the goal crease clear of opposition and also allow their goalies, Mike Tripp and Greg Rankin, to have a clear sight on most of * the shots. As with most hockey players this season, Port is learning that quite a few rules have been changed. So far this season, Port has fallen victim to quite a few penalties. Most of these have resulted from stick violations - a consequence of some of the 'supposed 57' new rule changes. Port's second game of the year was on the following Thursday against a much un- derstaffed team from Bowman- ville. The lopsided event saw "Vander Slag LAKERIDGE SKI PATROL's 4th Annual Ski Swap Saturday, Oct. 16 & Sunday, Oct. 17, 1993 ¢ 10 am to 5 pm at LAKERIDGE SKI RESORT, 19 km. north of Hwy 2 on Durham Rd. 23 (905) 649-2058 / (805) 686-3607 our Juveniles victorious with a 12-2 win. For the second game in a row, Darrell Vanderligt led ' the way with another hat trick. The scorers for Port Perry were: Ryan Ridgway and Sean McE- naney (with two each), Pere- man, Parry, Desautels, Prechit- ko and Wylie, Assists went to McEnaney '(with four), Wylie (with three), Desautels and Fitzgerald (with two each), and one each from: Leask, Styles, Pereman and Whitfield. Matt Willetts had a relatively easy evening, only al- . lowing two goals in such a re- laxed game. ph In the past, the Juveniles of Port Perry (and other towns) have always had to play with stigmatism surrounding, hang- ing over their heads. Some fans have avoided turning out to see hockey at this level - complain- ing that very little actual hock- ey is being played. They seem to think this league is simply an excuse for some to fight. Well, it seems hockey fights occur at all levels of hockey. I encourage you to get off the couch and catch a glimpse of some surpris- ingly talented hockey players - players who have not thrown their skates on the shelf just be- cause they are not playing for a Junior team. The first game for Port Perry was intense, rough, fast, and serious. If you consid- er yourself a true fan and sup- porter of the game of hockey, I hope you experience some of the excitement supplied by the Port Perry Juveniles. Port's home games are every Thursday evening around 9 p.m. Hope to see you out!
