Head: coach for the team o this year is Theresa Hutchinson who had the tough job of choos- ~- ing-her team from a fine: group lof enthusiastic Atom regis- 'trants.. Thanks go: out: to all players, who tried out for the team! sires EE | The team had a suéepssful de- but at home on Oct. 8 against perenial rival 'Stouffville as CASE & SRE they skated to a 4-2 victory. Chris Monsma was very steady for Port between the pipes throughout the contest. Dean Van Camp notched two goals with singles by Scott Brownson and Justin Whitworth. Assists were earned by. Adam Moynes, Dane Gray, Billy Carr (two), 'and Matt MacMaster. Grant Hooker and Sean Jeffrey were very steady on the blue line and Chris Skerratt did some tena- cious forechecking.. ) On' Oct. 10 our squad trav- elled to Alliston for their first tourney of the year. Their open- ing game was against a fast skating team from Peterbo- rough. Once again Chris Mon- sma made some excellent stops in net and the team showed a lot of determination in keeping the score close but absorbing a 2-1 loss. The "National" goalie stopped our tie opportunity with only seconds left on the clock. Our only goal of this one was by winger Steve Wygerde from Jason Whitworth and Scott Brownson. David Justynski (who returned from last year's Malmont squad) and Matt Cracknell broke up several rushes and were vigilant in cov- ering the slot area on defence. % Overall, this was a tough loss but we'll likely have another crack at this team in our regu- lar schedule. Our second tournament game saw us pump some goals that we would have liked to have earlier in the day. Jason Whit- worth opened the scoring from Steven Wygerde and the "white and green machine" cruised on - from there for a 7-0 shutout win The Port Perry MoJacks will hit the ice this Sunday night at Scugog Arena to begin their new season. Coach Brad Men- zies looks over his team at an exhibition game in Bowman- ville last week. Look inside this edition of the Port Perry Star for a special section introducing the 1993-94 MoJacks. Novice house league action Haugens 6 - Re/Max 4 Our first regular season game at 6 a.m. saw Haugens come up thé winner against Re/ Max. Other as- gists went to Scott Symes one, Jesse Mischtian two, Alexander Niclaou two, Jordan Froats and Kevin Gloster one assist each. For Re/Max Wesley Lang- maid and Stormy Wootton came up with two goals and one assist cach. Jeff Glanville and Clayton Gilmore also each has an assist. Other assists went to Pierce Jones with two, and one each for Billy Britt, Teddy How- arth and John Dutka. The goal tender for Van Camp was Tyler Webb and David McGarry for Port Perry Printing. over East Gwillimbury. Chris Monsma notched the "zero" in goal with good support from Joel Thomson, Tim Jones and. the other rearguards. Good backchecking by the forwards helped preserve this team shut- out as well. On the offensive side of things other goals were by Ja- son Whitworth (his second of the game), veteran Chris Sker- ratt (two), Dane Gray (two) and Dean Van Camp. Scott Brown- son notched five assists for a great game, Tim Jones had two as3ists and other assists were by Joel Thomson, Dane Gray, Grant Hooker, Billy Carr, Ste- ven Wygerde and Matt Mac- Master. Our win placed us in the tour- nament "B" final against Whit- by and we were off to a sluggish start as Whitby went up 1-Oon a bullet shot from the point. This jolted the team to life however, and we recovered to take a tough 4-3 victory and the "B" Championship medals. In this game, the wisdom of "always follow the puck to the net" paid off as three of our goals were rebounds off the ini- tial shots. Our scoring was done by Jason Whitworth's hat trick and another by Scott Brownson. Adam Moynes collected three assists and Chris Skerratt and Steven Wygerde also assisted. Nice season start team - three wins out of four games is quite well done! Likewise, the disci- pline of the team was impres- sive as our boys didn't take any penalties in the championship final. Keep up that hard work and unselfish play and success should continue to come your way. Good luck in your next home game on Oct. 22 at 8 p.m. PORT PERRY STAR - Wednesday, October 13, 1993 - 35 Novice Auctioneers come up short in home opener The Pearce Auction Novice hockey team had their home opener on Friday night.
