Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma, birth defects, environmental sensitivities, immune disor- ders, illness in children (who in- cidentally are extremely vul- nerable) have all been linked to pesticide use. Environmental damage threatens our very exis- tence and, as much as we may want to ignore it, it is a fact we must face up to. I have the most trouble with cosmetic use of pesticides. I do understand that farmers may find themselves between a rock (public demand for picture- perfect produce, competition from global markets) and a hard place (tough economic times, a chemical dependency on pesticides, adverse weather conditions). Be assured that large scale organic farming operations do exist. Initially, the choice may not be an easy one for some, but in the long run it is the best one. When I hear of the angry Blackstock farmer in his letter to the editor (Oct. 5) telling us that he spends over $35,000 a year on pesticides, I get wor- ried. Please understand I sup- port local farmers and urge oth- ers to do so, but at a farmers market, 1 will always buy or- ganic whenever I can. Call me crazy, but I would rather eat a blemished organic apple than a "perfect-looking" sprayed one. I am grateful for the opportu- nity to exchange ideas and in- formation, and hope we can keep the lines of communica- tion open. Let's 'get people. thinking, and taking an inter- est in this issue, because ulti- mately, we are all responsible for this land of ours, not just our farmers.
