"A Family Tradition for 127 Years" Trucker pleads not guilty to | dumping hazardous chemicals By Kelly Lown Port Perry Star An Oshawa trucker, accused of hauling hazardous chemicals which were later dumped in Scugog, pleaded not guilty Sep- tember 3 to six counts of contra- vening the Environmental Pro- tection Act. Alan MacDonald was charged in 1991 after environment min- istry officials found 300 45- gallon drums dumped in five lo- cations across Durham Region, including Scugog, Newcastle and Oshawa. Environment officials say he was not a licenced waste hauler and did not have any appropri- atelicences or permits. Most of the drums were found in the southern portion of the township on Lot 24, Concession 1. . Twenty-five drums, with the labels scratched off, were dumped in a field adjacent to a well abandonedin the 1920s. The drums contained petrole- um distillates, sulphuric acid, methylene chloride, xylene and other chemicals, Some of the drums ruptured, contaminat- ing the soil and ground water. Approximately $33,000 was spent cleaning up the area, in- cluding excavating the land and hauling away the contaminated soil. Garry Young, the former own- er of Jacklyn Industries in Oshawa, was sentenced to 30 days in jail earlier this year for his part in the dumping. He School enrolment up From page 1 were enrolled. This September 432 students are attending the school. Scugog Christian School is only down one student in its en- rolment of 61. Greenbank Public School has 1so remained with a steady en- rolment as 135 students are reg- istered, the same as 1992. Epsom Public School saw a slight decrease in student body as enrolment dropped down to 120 students from 1992's 129 students. The increase in the local schools is attributed to a larger demand at the kindergarten and junior kindergarten levels.
