By Kelly Lown Port Perry Star The Port Perry ModJacks are preparing for their 22nd season in the Central Ontario Junior C Hockey League, as training camp opens on Thursday, Sept. 9. Fifty-four players have con- firmed they will be turning out for the 1993 camp, including 14 returning players from last year's squad. Winners in the Bantam division were Chris Jamieson, first; Lawrence Cook, second; and "The camp i8 open to anyone wishing to try out for the team," general manager Murray Par- liament told the Star. Anyone wanting to try out for the 1993/94 team should con- tact Parliament before opening day of the camp, by calling him at 985-7295. The MoJdacks have a new coaching staff for the 1993/94 season. Brad Menzies, a former player and assistant coach, will be handling the head coach du- ties, while Chic Carnegie and Ian Cooper, former ModJdack goaltender, will be taking over as assistant coaches. Camp will be held at Scugog Arena on Thursday and Sunday evenings throughout the month of September. Eight exhibition games are also planned during camp. Next game Sept. 7 Midgets undefeated in playoff action This sports report for the Midget Merchant Fastball team is sponsored by Galley Fish and Seafood, Haugens and J.B.K. Enterprises. On Aug. 26, the Merchants played their final league game of the year in Greenbank. The home team went ahead quickly, 3-0 in the first. The Merchants drove in a run in the second, two more in the third, and the game remained tied until the end of . the fifth. The Gamblers struck for four runs in the fifth inning, and won the game 7-3. Chad Venning pitched a strong five innings, striking out two and allowing only three earned runs. Denis Smith re- lieved in the sixth, striking out one and allowing no hits and no earned runs. This was a good effort by the Midget Merchants against a strong Greenbank squad of vet- eran players. The league playoffs started Aug. 30 with Port's first oppo- nent being O'Toole's, the team which placed second in league play. O'Toole's drove in two runs in the third which held un- til the top of the sixth inning. The Merchant bats came alive and five runners crossed the plate to go ahead with a score of 5-2. O'Toole's threatened in the bottom of the seventh, but were only able to score one run for a final score of 6-3. The next playoff game against Oshawa "BB" on Thurs- day, Sept. 2 was rained out and has been rescheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 7 at Durham Fields. wt The playoffs are a double 'knockout format and the three undefeated teams so far are the Greenbank Gamblers, Oshawa . "BB" and the Port Perry Midget Merchants. Bowmanville has been eliminated from the playoffs, and the Port Perry Ea- gles next game will be 8:45 p.m. Sept. 7 against O'Toole's at Durham Fields. However, the double header scheduled for last Thursday night was rained out which has necessitated a revised playoff schedule. The Greenbank Gamblers last week played twice and re- corded a pair of wins over Bow- manville and the Stouffville rs. The next Gambler game will be played this Thursday night at Greenbank Park at 8 p.m, against the winner of the Tues- day night game between the Games are as follows; Saturday, Sept. 18, Bradford will be at Scugog Arena. Game time is 7:30 p.m. Schomberg arrives for a 7:30 p.m. game the following night. On Sept. 21 the MoJacks will be in Bradford for a game at 8:30 p.m., then will move on to Ux- bridge on Sept. 24 and Schom- berg Sept. 25. Uxbridge will come to Port playoff action Oshawa Double "B" Club and the Port Perry Merchants. The game pits the All Ontario Junior "A" champions (Oshawa Double "B") versus the All Onta- rio Midget "B" champs (Port Perry Merchants) and the Gam- blers- will play the winner in Greenbank this Thursday. The winner of this game in Greenbank will advance to the league championship finals, while the loser must come through the loser bracket to get into the finals. At any rate the game in Greenbank on Thursday night should be a dandy. Game time - 8 p.m. 4 oJacks open training camp Sept. 9 Perry Sept. 26 for a 7:30 p.m. start and Bowmanville is in on Sept. 30. Game time will be 8 p-m. The final exhibition game for the ModJacks will be in Bow- manville on Oct. 3.
