Chief Steele is alarmed by the 'number of fire calls the two "halls have responded to recent- ly caused by illegal fires. Ac- cording to the fire chief, there have been 1563 to date this year. Of that total 21 were burning re- lated fires of which 18 were ille- gal burns. Chief Steele told council members time, money and man- power was wasted in respond- ing to these unnecessary calls. STAR OFFICE CENTRE He said the bylaw would ensure tighter restrictions on the fires. Although they realize the need for such a bylaw, council was critical of some aspects of the document including the need to apply in person for a per- mit. Regional Councillor Yvonne Christie criticized this provi- sion arguing residents will ig- nore the requirement. "To have to get a permit, I am one to admit that I wouldn't take the time to come in and get one." Councillor Christie argued the old system of informing the. township by telephone of one's burning plans was adequate. Area Councillor Harvey Gra- ham, a member of the Fire Com- mittee, agreed it was an incon- venience for residents to obtain permission to burnin person. Councillor Graham, a farmer by: profession, admitted 'he would not come into town to ob- tain permission "each time. he chose to burn. Councillor Graham also ex- pressed concern that-if burning was too tightly regulated, more items would be re-routed to landfill sites, wy "It boils down to a political de- cision. Do we want more refuse going into landfill. It boils down to a difficult decision," he said. But Councillor Graham add- ed if a few of the unnecessary calls were eliminated then "w willbenefit.". / The Fire Committee will fine tune the bylaw for council's ap- proval. Building expansion at fairground Scugog Council has approved plans for renovations to some buildings on the fairgrounds. - Dr. Bill Cohoon, president of 4 the Port Perry Agricultural So- ciety, appeared before council on Monday seeking permission to expand some of the buildings to accommodate more people and storage space. According to Dr. Cohoon, the $4,000 project calls for a 48 foot 'by 40 foot expansion to the exist- ing picnic shelter at the fair- grounds. The building would provide changerooms for entertainers and storage space for props. A larger office for the fair board would also be built. According to Dr. Cohoon it would: be more cost efficient to: 'build a new office as thé costs to repair the structure would ex- - ceed the cost of a new structure. GRADUATE GLENN MALCOLM Glenn Malcolm of Nestleton received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology from Trent University during the recent Convocation exercises. Glenn is presently farming and managing a retail store in Lindsay. Council approved the request for the additions contingent on approval by the building depart- ment. The fair board and Scugog Council have been at odds re- cently over the future of the fair- grounds at the corner of Region- al Road 8 and Old Simcoe Road. Council is in favor of moving the site across the street, while the fair board: is fighting to retain the historicsite. At a recent meeting council called on the board to develop a five-year plan for the prime land. Dr. Cohoon told council that the board is consulting with a structural engineer and are in the process of developing the plan. It will: be. .council when completed. : resented to GRADUATE TERRY PARROTT Terry Parrott has recently graduated from the Mechanical Engineering Technology Program at Durham College.
