"A Family Tradition for 127 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, June 22, 1993 - 35 Scugog Angels squeak by the Dodgers 8-7 This past week was hectic for the Scugog Angels. First they fi- nally won a league game, de- eating Whitby "Bufo Dodgers" Janie Thornton pitched and held Whitby off the scoresheet until the fourth inning and only then did Whitby start to get their act together and score one in the fourth, adding two more in the fifth inning. Janie, up to this time, was throwing a two hitter, while her teammates scored two in the third inning, off a walk to Joyce Parkinson a sacrifice bunt by Miara Skuja, Janie Thornton helped her own cause with a single, then Tracy Smith dropped in a double to score two, Amber Wood then singled before the end of the third. Then the Angels' Kim Stewart tripled, scored on Laura Dug- geon single, then stole second, and scored on Miara Skuja's double. Janie Thornton then singled to score Miara, Amber Wood then tripled, driving Lumbermen and Heating men meet By Judy MacSween On June 15, Lake Scugog Lumber hosted a game against Perfect Heating on the Green- bank turf. Great game played by both teams. Perfect Heating came up with the win because of excellent pitching by Matt Sturgess and Joel Thomson. Matt and Joel also did a fine job at the plate hitting three for four. Perfect Heating's bats were working well for Robert Moore, Sean Fletcher, Chad Yakeley, Ben Frith and Mike Phoenix' who all hit three for four. Hitting four for four were Paul Chang, Travis Howell and Steven Martin. Jason Cooper and Travis MacSween played a good game on the infield. Lake Scugog Lumber's catch- er Brennan Malcolm did an ex- cellent job all evening. Mike Stevens played great defensive ball on first and offensively he hit a home run and went two for three at the plate. Chris Lang- ford played well contributing to a fine double play and who also scored a home run. Hank's wins Monday June 14 was an excit- ing night of ball between Hank's Pastries and Cottrell's Cuspids. Cottrell's David McGarry made a super play with a fly ball. Teammates Shannon O'Donnell and Rebecca McDo- nald demonstrated great defen- give plays with skilled infield catching. It was a great night for Hank's Craig Thompson who slammed a hit past first base. Ryan Hockley and Lucas Fraser stopped Cottrell's Cuspids with an awesome fly ball and a dou- ble play. These six, seven and eight year olds played a great game! home Thornton, and then scored on Nancy McConnell's single. In the top of the seventh, Whitby with four straight sin- gles and an error were able to put three runs across before Amber Wood started a double play to first to home which saw Nancy McConnell and a Whitby player collide. Both two differ- ent ways, but Nancy held onto the ball as the runner from third was called out to end the game. The final score was 8-7. Not only did Janie Thornton pitch a good game, she also pitched in with three hits and a run balled in. Nancy McConnell with a strong game behind the plate, also had two hits and a home- run. Amber Wood had a triple and a single as did Kim Stew- art. Nancy McConnell had three runs batted in. What a win. Angels Win One Lose Two at Ancaster The Scugog Angels travelled to Ancaster, Ontario on the weekend to compete in the An- caster Ladies Senior Fastball Tournament, and when we ar- rived they were met with rain or drizzle and we play through. On Saturday morning we hooked up with Norwich Jets and we were stopped to the tune of a 9-0 loss. Andrea Peters, Ja- nie Thornton, and Colleen Reid all had hits on behalf of the An- gels. In the afternoon game the Chatters of Oakville were our next opposition and this was a well played game. Oakville got on the scoreboard first, after picking up three singles and an error for their run. But the An- gels came right back with An- drea Peters singling, stealing second, then scored on Gina Spence's single to left, Janie Thornton then singled, along with Kim Stewart's walk. We then scored on Barbara Doran's single before the inning ended. Oakville then tied it up on three singles as a stolen base to knot the score at 2-2. The Angels tried their best but couldn't put any more run- ners across home plate. Oakville got one in the fifth to take the lead, and then never looked back as they added two more in the sixth to win 5-2. Janie Thornton pitched su- perb in this game but had to take the loss. Angels Win Sunday In their third game of the tournament, the Angels took an early lead on a fielder's choice. Then Nancy McConnell singled with Laura Dudgeon ahead of her scored on Gena Spence's single and Nancy scored on Ja- nie's ground ball error to third, who then threw wide to first which allowed McConnell to score giving Scugog Angels an early lead 2-0. Andrea Peters then went to work allowing only three hits, as well as striking out eight bat- tersin the first inning. Scugog had many more chances but couldn't get any more runs across the home plate. Things got really hecticin the bottom of the seventh as Bur- lington put three hits and a walk together but only got one run across the plate. Peters struck out two more before the inning ended with Scugog An- gels hanging on for a 2-1 win. Burlington was one of the strongest teams the Angels played, not taking anything away from Norwich either. Andrea Peters threw a six hit- ter, Barbara Doran, Tracy Smith, Nancy McConnell, Gena Spence, along with five walks really helped in trying to push more runs across but couldn't. The Angels play the Oshawa Double "Bs" on Wednesday night at Durham College. This" should be a real hummer of a ball game.
