Last week a group of Durham Board Trustees including both Joyce Kelly and myself trav- elled to Haliburton to visit the Durham Board students at- tending the Arts and Music Camps. More than 400 Durham stu- dents are attending the Arts Camp White Pine. This experi- ence is designed to assist stu- dents in discovering and enjoy- ing the aesthetic qualities in nature in the man-made world and to have them respond crea- Land tively to challenges provided by an excellent staff of teachers and practising artists. The pro- gram is conducted in a rustic forest and lake environment and designed for students who excel in the arts. It was wonderful to see the students taking advantage of the opportunities available to them to study and create in the processes of drawing, painting, sculpting, printmaking, ceram- ics, stained glass, carving, leather sculpture, puppetry, More than 400 students are attending the arts camp White Pine in Haliburton Including Amanda Pelyk from Port Perry High School and Stephanie MacDonald from R.H. The second site, Camp Tow- hee, located directly across the small lake (Lake Placid) houses more than 125 Durham stu- dents for an immersion experi- ence for interested, talented music students. Small groups of students, under the guidance of capable instructors, work out- of-doors or in studios through- out the camp. Activities in- clude: concert bands, stage bands, ensembles of flute and clarinet, brass, saxophone and percussion, choirs for chamber ensemble and vocal jazz. In both camps, students also enjoy water activities and land activities and sports. It certain- ly is a tremendous opportunity REGION for meeting new friends, having a lot of fun while getting some intensive instruction and activi- ty in the fields you enjoy. The camps work on a cost recovery basis and are staffed by Dur- ham Board personnel, local art- ists and university student in- structors. A number of organizations contribute to the success including: the secon- dary and elementary teacher's federations: CUPE (Local 218); Robert McLaughlin Gallery; Lo- cal Artist; the Ajax, Oshawa and Brooklin Optimist Clubs; All Points Delivery; Gestetner:- Commodore; IBM Canada; On- tario Arts Council; and Employ- ment and Immigration Canada, Summer Works Program.
