The 32-year-old Seagrave res- ident was selected as one of three Canadian winners in the Losing to Win contest spon- sored by Weight Watchers and Family Circle magazine. Her prize included a four-day all expense paid trip to New York City where she and 29 oth- er winners from North America were honored at Weight Watch- ers 30th Anniversary luncheon. They were also given make- overs by Family Circle maga- zine. "It was fabulous," Mrs. Kelly says of the experience. We're proud. treated wus and queens." But life wasn't always so fab- ulous. Mrs. Kelly remembers being heavy as a child. She felt differ- ent from the other kids and was withdrawn and shy. As a teen and young adult, she avoided socializing because she felt awkward about her weight. "Besides, I only had two out- fits that fit me and going clothes shopping wash't exactly high on my priority list of pleasures," she says. When she did get up the cou- rage to go to a restaurant for dinner, Mrs. Kelly used a golf counter to keep track of the like kings GRADUATE ANNETTE M. FOSTER Annette M. Foster graduated on June 4, 1993 from Trent University, Peterborough with her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Environmental Studies. "I can only look back now and laugh," she says. "I am sure eve- ryone in the restaurant heard that counter and wondered what was goingon." Mrs. Kelly weighed 206 pounds when she joined Weight Watchers in 1987. She lost 71 pounds in six months and has keptit off. "Painful childhood memories are faded now because of all the wonderful things that have hap- pened to me since I found the self-confidence to stop eating and take a bite out of life," she says. Her proudest moment was when she participated in the Canadian Olympic torch relay on Boxing Day, 1987. "I couldn't even walk up two flights of stairs when I was heavy," she says. "Today, I have so much energy I do aerobics three times a week at the Prince Albert Hall and I walk every day." Mrs. Kelly's adventurous side began to show after losing the weight. With the encourage- ment of her sister-in-law she de- cided to put an ad in her former hometown newspaper's com- panions column. She met her husband Rob through the ad and is now the proud mother of two children. Mrs. Kelly shares her experi- ences with others who are fight- ing the battle of the bulge. She is the leader of the Port Perry Weight Watchers group which meets on Tuesday evenings at the Presbyterian Church. "We're all there to help each other because everyone loses their motivation from time to time."
