Cancer drive nets more than $37,000 24 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, June 15, 1993 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" BR a oe Cancer Drive Nets Over $37,000 The annual drive for Cancer, held during the month of April for funds re the Township of Scugog has been a most success- ful one. When total proceeds were tabulated by Chairperson Doris Taylor, the results were very satisfying indeed, with over $37,000. The Cancer Society wishes to warmly thank all those who helped to make it the success it was. The captains, the canvass- ers, and the generous donors, are all to be commended for a tremendous effort put forth by each and every one. There were many new volunteers this year and we do congratulate them. We have received a warm re- sponse from the public, as in past years, and we are deeply grateful. A great task complet- ed by the many folks involved. Cancer can be beaten if only we work hard enough. Our thanks to a terrific Campaign Chair- person Doris Taylor for her ma- jor share in this drive for funds - and her Executive! Family Visitations Laurie (Malcolm) Wells has returned to her home in Wai- hou, New Zealand, following an ( Nestleton, Caesarea, 0 by Mabel Cawker bh, {ep enjoyable month's holiday with her parents, [Lawrence and Gwen Malcolm of Nestleton. She spent time with all her sis- ters and brothers and got to know her nieces and nephews. The 62nd Annual Gerrow Re- union was held on June 13 at Nestleton Community Centre with ideal weather conditions. The sports program was fol- lowed by a bountiful pothuck meal and social time. Delighted to have an enjoya- ble visit with Dr. Robert and Evelyn Bonney of Kingston, Nova Scotia, one evening dur- ing the week at the Cawker farmstead. Evelyn is a cousin of yours truly. They have been vis- iting relatives throughout On- taro. Good to have Son Alan and Eleanor Cawker of Oshawa on Saturday, also Grant Cawker who was visiting at the farm- ~ stead on Wednesday...we had a fine time gardening. On Sun- day afternoon, it was nice to see Curt and Christine Cawker and little Merisa from Cobourg, and a time of catching up on the news was of interest. Daughter Marlene Bannister of Peterborough, and mom Neta Fish of Edgerton Road, met another daughter, Audrey Leishman at the Bonfire In Lindsay and enjoyed lunch and a social time together. Caesarea News The great news this week was the Durham police versus the Scugog Fire Fighters ball game. | know the firefighters would rather skip this as the score was 31-9. Our thanks to both organizations for a great game. Thanks to the umpires - 'Wayne Bradt and Ron Rown- tree. We were very proud to have had so many turn up for the meal before the game. Ei- leen wishes to thank Muriel Selby, Karen McEachern, Fran Binns, and Ruth Pearce for their help bringing along spe- cial dishes of food. Thanks to Helen and Bill Stevenson who handled the gate and snack bar. Also Doug Hollingworth, Don Putsey, and our Ward 4 councillcor, David Dietlien for transporting and setting up. My apoligies to James as I was like the student minister who was reading his sermon and fi- nally had the courage to look up and lost his place. I dropped my book. Thanks to the Mayor for his kind words and Jean Pearce who arranged the game, the Nestleton Park and Hall Board for the use of the grounds. Nestleton Women's Institute The Nestleton Branch was invited to Blackstock United Church to meet with Black- stock Branch, on Wednesday, when Gwen and Lawrence Mal- colm accompanied by daughter Laurie Wells of New Zealand, presented an address on the in- terests re New Zealand. Many souvenirs were on display and Laurie answered questions about the life in the country where she lives with her hus- band, Graham Wells. President May Shortridge welcomed all present and after a dessert luncheon opened with the Ode, Collect and Grace fol- lowed by a poem "Friends". Each Branch then held their own business meeting. Rika Wyerde president, called for minutes and Treasurer's re- port, which were approved. On May 20, the Award for Six Clubs to Linda Flett from Nes- tleton Women's Institute had been made on Fourth Achieve- ment night. The Award to Grade 8 pupil for "most im- provement in writing" will go to the Cartwright Public School principal to be presented. Report of the 90th Anniver- sary of Hampton Women's In- stitute celebrated June 1, was attended by Neta Fish and Win- nifred Davison was given. Gla- dys King thanked members for card sent while she was ill. Nestleton United Church A beautiful Sunday morning greeted the worshippers who attended Nestleton United, June 13 at 11:15 a.m. with Richard and Janice MacKenzie extending the welcome at the door. Rev. Dale Davis conduct- ed the service and opened with the Call to Worship followed by Prayer. The trio sang "Through It Al" with Karen Yellowlees at the piano. The children's theme was about "the family tree". The fine message for the con- gregation "The Gift of Laugh- ter" with scripture from Gene- sis and Matthew.
