16 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, June 15, 1993 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice' To the Editor: Thank you for your reply to my recent letter of protest re- garding the report of the Abor- tion Service Providers. I was surprised to receive a response from you albeit its sub- stance was more like that of a form letter. I was surprised as well that you seem to blithely equate such "tail-wagging-the-dog" or- anizations as Planned Parent- ood with being somehow rep- resentative of the majority view on the issue of abortion! One can only wonder how pandering to leftist extremists benefits the real majority. It's like saying that Patricia Ireland as head of the National Organization of Women is representative of all women seeking equality; there- fore you as a politician must be "tasked," as you put it, to force into legislatiqn th Lesbian Feminists and their myopic lobby groups. How does this proposition square with logic, let alone de- mocracy? Of course you are entitled to your opinions and due respect for your positions and office, but one must appreciate, Mr. Mills, that you are indeed a politician, and as such, your argument concerning majority represen- SHEILA'S HAIRSTYLING 115 Perry Street, Port Perry 985-3597 Hair Services Leigh, Tammy, Julie ° Men's & Ladies cuts Colours, Perms, Highlights Nails by Anne Acrylics fills New Set * Regular & French Manicure also avatlable For more information call 985-3597. That way you don't have to stand for anything, other than a little heat once in a while, as long as thoke special interests are upheld and cowtowed to once they get you elected. The main point of my protest in any event, Mr. Mills, goes more to the heart of our demo- cratic rights than it does in tak- ing sides in any emotional con- troversy over who speaks for whom. I, as an individual, am con- cerned primarily that other in- dividuals, as well as institu- tions comprised of individuals, would be impelled according to the recommendations of this re- port, to act against conscience and be compromised by law to perform murder, and/or to rec- ommend murder. This is what is at issue here and not whether one side or another is fomenting further ideological splits in the debate; or whether the "law" or the government should "inter- fere" in such a personal deci- sion. Surely you can surmount this deflective rationalization. Although who defends the rights of unborn children in all of this is a legitimate question. Questions...Call Norma Van Camp 985-3527 A RR NN Open letter to Gord Mills debates the abortion issue chance to grow up and have money or a vote? Certainly not politicians. I guess for obvious reasons. But...what tools and levers other than government and the "law" do the likes of the Abor- tion Service Providers and oth- er groups use to get their agen- das mot and fulfilled? These predominately leftist and often radical interests are hardly rep- resentative of any real cross-cut majority. Indeed can even the real majority be the final arbi- ter of moral conscience in any society? : ab: You allude further to the fact that politicians such as your- self, do not have answers butin- stead you point to what you call "sanctimonious misguided peo- ple speaking for the rest of us etc..." but I say to you sir, "Don't - patronize me...I am galled by your impudency...us indeed!" I, an individual, belong to no group at all, Pro-Life or other- wise. No one yanks my chain. I protest by my own choice. No, I am simply outraged at the very notion of peoples' rights being railroaded to satisy self-serving minority agendas. How can one remain calm and complacent while bureaucrats deal our values and freedoms away as if they counted for nothing? As if the price they were bought at were always go- ing to be affordable? The low point of your letter was the Dr. Gunn reference. Your co-relating the activities of various Pro-Life groups and the limitations placed upon them, with the reprehensible .and isolated actions of a de- ranged, lone gunman in this shooting death in Florida is not only pitiful, it is barely worthy of comment from me at all in the context of my protest. But since I must assume from it that you are either ignorant or extremist in your views, I will say for my own part that the act of murder, in any circumstance, is a heinous offense and one that ought always to be prose- cuted and duly punished under the full extent of the law. Subse- quently Dr. Gunn's killer will be brought to full account for his crime against society and moral justice. Such a cold-blooded act can neither be condoned norisit defensible by any measure of reason. Who could defend such vio- lence and murder? Contrary again to your views as to what constitutes a majori- ty Mr. Mills, let me simply state that there are many of us indi- viduals out here who not only support the right to life, liberty of conscience, freedom of speech and all the precious values we used to take so much for grant- ed in our society, but who are also fed up with hi-jacking of those values for the sake of ex- pediancy and political accom- modation. Hopefully, if you decide to re- ply to this letter, you can do me the courtesy of addressing my legitimate concerns as a taxpay- er and a citizen. The "choice" that feminists, abortionists and all anti-life are fighting for is the choice of hav- ing government right up there in the womb where they can ma- nipulate it and ultimately suffo- cate its real and true value. This is not a health care is- sue. It is an ugly political agen- da and we the people know it. Death is the primary indus- try and ultimate design of this agenda and we the people will not stand for it. Frank Trainor, A Concerned Citizen and Taxpayer paar.
