"A Family Tradition for 127 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, June 15, 1993 - 9 Two arrested with illegal liquor Remember When ? 45 YEARS AGO Thursday, June 10, 1948 On June 2, 1948, in the auditorium of Port Perry High School with an audience of 500 officers and members of the Blue Ray Chapter, No. 238, Order of the Eastern Star was instituted. The pupils and staff at PPHS travelled to Lynnbrook Park on June 4 for a picnic to finish the school year. The Port Perry Board of Education plans to inaugurate a Kindergarten primary class in September, 1948. 35 YEARS AGO Thursday, June 12, 1958 At the council meeting of June 7, Reeve J. J. Gibson reported that rehabilitation work on Well No. 1 was not progressing as well as planned due to the equipment of Railway and Power Engineering not being suitable for the job. Miss Helen Honey, Seagrave, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Honey, and Miss Sandra James, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Cyril James, Scugog Island, received their pins and diplomas at the graduation of the 1958 nursing class of Oshawa General Hospital. Deputy District Governor Lion Art Brunton visited the local Lions Club on the occasion of their 20th Charter Night. Lion Art installed the officers for the coming year. 30 YEARS AGO Thursday, June 13, 1963 Jeanne Williams graduated from the nursing course at Oshawa General Hospital. Mr. and Mrs. Oscar McQuade celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. They were married in Blackstock on June 4, 1913. Congratulations were extended to Miss Nancy Gibson, Greenbank, on winning first prize in the Farm Safety Poster Conference open to Public School pupils of Ontario County. The prize was seven silver dollars. A resolution was carried at a special meeting of the council of the village of Port Perry, that the water main was to be extended along an existing street in Port Perry. The Port Perry Waterworks Department will pay the cost to a minimum of 100 feet per guaranteed water user as long as the council did not have to open a new road. 25 YEARS AGO Thursday, June 13, 1968 The University of Guelph granted degrees and diplomas to 670 students this spring. George R. Fawns of Port Perry reccived an Associate Diploma in Agriculture. Denis Symes and Bruce Smith became the happy recipients of Queen's Scout Badges on Sunday at the Manchester United Church. Rick Larocque won first prize at the Jamboree Amateur Show at Grand Valley Park, Pickering for his singing and guitar playing. 20 YEARS AGO Wednesday, June 13, 1973 Arthur Latcham received a handshake and warm congratulations from Port Perry Reeve Bob Kenny at the opening of the Latcham Community Centre. He was given a standing ovation from the more than 200 people attending the occasion. The MVP award for Flamingo Junior C hockey club was presented to goaltender Phil Gilroy. Making the presentation was coach Ivan Luke and Jack Kane, an executive of the club. 10 YEARS AGO Tuesday, June 14, 1983 Four young men from Oshawa had to jump to safety when the $6,000 boat they had just launched at the Port Perry waterfront exploded. About $10,000 worth of antiques were stolen from the Lee House at the Scugog Shores Muscum. Nine-year-old Landon Drew of Port Perry found an 1881 Canadian dime while digging in his backyard. Two men face charges of ille- gally importing liquor after be- ing arrested by the RCMP. According to Durham Region- al Police, a van containing ap- proximately $30,000 worth of liquor was seized on June 8 at a residence on the 7th Concession of Uxbridge. A subsequent investigation uncovered more than $30,000 of liquor illegally imported from the United States. An Ingleside, Ontario man, as well as a Markham man were charged with importing illegal spirits. Gary Edgar selected as band chief Gary Edgar, Economic Devel- opment Officer for the Missis- sauga's of Scugog Island First Nation, has been selected the band's new chief, in an election last week. Art Goose and Rick Edgar were named councillors. The appointments are for a term of two years. Mr. Edgar will continue to Seive in his present capacity as well.
