2 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, June 8, 1993 Council will not comment on Bell Canada's rate hike plans If you want to comment on Bell Canada's long distance plan you'll have to pick up the phone yourself. That's what Scugog council decided on Monday after pass- ing a formal resolution declin- ing comment. Council was debating wheth- eror not to take a position on the phone company's newly pro- posed long distance proposal. Last month a representative from Bell came to council seek- ing its position on a proposed rate hike and extended long dis- tance calling area. Under the plan the rate for a single line would jump from $8.75 to $22.45 and an average residential bill would increase by 6.19 per cent to $49.89 per month. The calling area would also be expanded to cover from Burling- ton to Bowmanville and north to Port Perry. Blackstock would not be included, however. Councillors were divided on whether or not they should en- dorse the scheme. Most claimed that the com- munity which they served were as divided on the issue as they were. After a number of resolutions were defeated, council passed a resolution suggesting that it take no position on the matter. Thisleavesitin the hands ofthe publictoexpress their concerns. But Ward 3 Councillor Ken Gadsden disapproved of this proposal and warned them that they would regret the decision. "It's an opportunity that might not come again," he said, He feels the community as a whole could benefit from the plan, arguing that most people are spending far more on lon distance charges por month than the rate increases. Tho proposal is currently be- ing hoard by tho CRTC and pub- lic comment is Ci dered when n decision is made, Council not impressed with design of building From Page 1 sentatives trom the Michael Stewart Group presented an up dated plan for the commercial and residential development on Highway TA at Water Street. The developers have present ed a number of plana to council in the past year, but little progress \ as been made. Erin's Leigh wa a 96,000- square foot commercial develop- ment with approximately 120 condominium units. Council showed its impa- tience with the developers who have altered the plans on a number of occasions. "When are you going to come up with a final design," asked Ward 2 Councillor Marilyn Pearce, noting the number of changes which were made since council passed a bylaw concern- ing the waite a number of months nyo, Joe Cornneehin, n reproenonta- tive rom the group, waid the fi- nal plans are "tonant-driven and out of the hands of the de- velopers, But Councillor Pearce argued council had the ultimate deci- sion on the matter and could ef- loctively squelch any decision from the developers. Sho called on the developers to present specifics. Although Mr. Cornacchia re- quested council pass a decision on the plans presented to them, they refused to pass judgement until next week. Both projects will receive a second hearing at a June 14 planning meeting. In the meantime both parties will have to go back to the draft- ing table to alter their plans.
