Nonquon Jets begin season With just over a month until the summer of 1993 officially begins, the Victoria County men's slo-pitch league is in full swing with the regular season schedule getting underway last week. The Nonquon Jets, playing out of Greenbank met with some success last season and ~ are hoping for even better re- sults for 1993. The club had a winning record of 16-10 in regular sea- son play last year and when all was said and done finished in sixth spot overall. Now, with a full season as a unit behind them, the Jets will try to improve their record and be a significant force come playoff time. The team opened the season at home last Monday hosting the Woodville Maroons. Being perhaps too anxious to get off to a good start, the Jets squan- dered an early 2-1 lead by giv- ing up seven Woodville runs in the second inning. A small rally in the fourth inning brought the Jets to within two runs before the Maroons put the game away with five runs in the fifth and eight more in the seventh. Despite a fine performance by shortstop Bob Fielding who went five for five at the plate while scoring three times, the Jets were unable to slow the Woodville bats and ended up dropping a 30-16 decision. Wednesday night, however, the club evened its' record at 1-1 with a 35-4 drubbing of the Swampers in Manilla. Fielding, this time as the pitcher, had another solid out- ing giving up only nine hits, while going two for four with a homer at the plate. With the Jets playing solid defense be- hind him, Fielding held the op- position to a single run until the home half of the last inning. Terry Williamson, batting in the leadoff position, scored five. runs and went six for six includ- ing a triple and a pair of dou- bles, while the number two bat- ter, Mike Enzi helped the Jets cause with six runs and six hits. Second baseman Dave Smith, who suffered an injury-plagued '92 season, looked healthy enough on this night as he hit four doubles and scored a pair of runs. The Jets don't play again un- til the last day in May when they host the Manilla Imperials in Greenbank for an 8:30 p.m. start.
