PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, May 11, 1993 - 17 Informal or formal Well designed, properly installed water garden is a wonderful addition Small garden pools have served as attractive focal points in numerous gardens through- out history. Consequently the phenomenon of water garden- ing has grown increasingly pop- ular. It is not uncommon to dis- cover a small pond where gold- fish dart from beneath lily pads in a typical suburban back yard. A well designed and properly in- stalled water garden can be a wonderful addition to your landscape. All of the supplies you will need can be found at your local garden centre. Flexible pond liners and the other necessary construction materials are readily available. So whether you build your pond yourself or hire an experienced landscape contractor the price will be quite reasonable. One of the considerations you will have to make is whether you want a formal or an infor- mal garden. A formal pool will be symmetrical and uniform in shape. These pools would nor- mally be surrounded by brick edging and a symmetrical planting of neatly trimmed shrubs and hedges. The informal garden should be a free flowing shape and be edged with different sized rocks. A well designed informal water garden will appear as if planned by nature. A perfect compliment to this informal wa- ter garden would be a cottage garden. The cottage garden de- signed in the English style was made popular decades ago. Likely the favorite of many of our grandparents the cottage garden is once again growing in popularity. Here bands of color provided by well planned peren- nial and annual beds offer a dis- play reminiscent of nature's own. Another consideration will be whether you desire still water or running water. A small wa- terfall or fountain allows for aeration in your pond and pro- vides the soothing sound of run- ning water. The addition of aquatic plants and fish is a good way to top off your water garden. Wa- ter lilies which are available in a variety of colors can easily be grown in your back yard pool. The hardy variety of water lilies should be placed into the pool within their own container. Pro- vided the pool is adequate depth so that it does not freeze to the root stalk they may remain in the pool all year long. In an in- formal pool bog plants should be set at the edges to provide a transition into the naturalized plantings that surround the (Across from Castle Harbour) Quick and efficient service at reasonable prices! The addition of fish will add a further dimension to your wa- ter garden. Small goldfish can be bought at many local pet stores. The ultimate size of these fish depends on the size of the pool but outdoors they nor- mally grow 10" - 12." Koi or Jap- anese carp can be added for an exotic touch and these fish will eventually grow to be 2' - 3' in length. Soif your yard or patio is look- ing a little drab consider a wa- ter garden to add an intriguing feature. If you decide to build your own pool be sure to re- search construction techniques thoroughly to insure your gar- dens success. Or have an experi- enced landscape contractor build it for you.
