And Bill Wozney, who owns the property at Union Avenue and King Street where the tree is located, says the sooner the tree comes down the better. Some of the tree is on his propeft- ty while most is on township property. Mr. Wozney says the tree, which he estimates to be ap- proximately 40-years-old, is rot- ted and dying. He recently got permission from the Township of Scugog to have the tree removed and a lo- cal man began to cut it down two weeks ago. Neighbors intervened howev- er, arguing that the tree, which is affectionately called the "Jell- O Tree" by the neighborhood children, is a favorite play spot for the children. They took their concern to Ward 1 Councillor Ken Car- ruthers who pledged to help pro- tect the tree. Despite the neighbors' con- cerns, Mr. Wozney says the tree will he coming down. He says not only is the tree rotting and dying, but it is also interferring with the overhead power lines. Mr. Wozney is also concerned that the tree is unsafe and is afraid the children will hurt ~ property. Fm not objecting to the kids playing in a tree, it's just not safe," he said. Lo - Mr. Wozney says he is pre- pared to go to jail over the mat- ter. He has vowed to take pieces of the tree and dump in Council- lor Carruther's doughnut shop. "I haven't been in jail before, so I might as well go now," he said. : Mr. Wozney says frustration has led him to take this action. "I'm frustrated enough al- ready," he said. "I'm going to in- sist that it comes down." He plans to have the tree down to allow access to a drive- way off Union Avenue. The tree currently blocks this access. "I want it down so I can make use of my driveway," he said. The plight of this tree has caused some hard feelings in the neighborhood and generat- ed a fair amount of name call- ing, Mr. Wozney says. "I'm not a bad neighbor," he says, pointing to the fact that he allows the neighborhood chil- dren to play on his one acre =! Area {HANS e Stonemoor Daycare is 5: open year round.
