The official dedication was performed by members of coun- cil, the works department and - the Port Perry Rotary Club. The focus area will be the southern entrance to the park which will feature designated planting of deciduous shrubs and wildflower mass, supple" mented by Maple and Ash trees. "Rotary Park" extends north of the boat launch through the existing marshland. The park is being named for the Rotarians in appreciation for their out- standing contributions to the park and recreation aspect of the community over the years. The purpose behind the pro- ject is to turn the lands into a natural park where people can enjoy nature in a passive set- ting. The park will help preserve the shoreline and the lake which has been deteriorating over the years. "We are reclaiming the land," said Marilyn Pearce, Ward 2 Councillor and Chairman of the Parks and Recreation Commit- tee : up the area. The initial planting of several Ash trees and the preparation of three flower beds took place on Earth Day. Plant- ing will continue into the first week of May and again in the fall. When the project is complete 117 Matis and Ash trees, 12 White Spruce and 22 flower beds, along with shrubs and wildflowers, will grace the boat launch area. The Parks and Recreation De- | partment received a grant from the Ministry of Tourism and Recreation earlier in the year for the area, but additional help was needed to have the en- trance way completed this year. . "The Rotary Club has an envi- ronmental vision and this fits in with it," Councillor Pearce told the Star. The Rotarians have agreed to supply the manpower and labor for the construction of the en- tranceway as well as an ongoing commitment to planting trees {each year. trance struc- The planting of trees' and ure "oho. The entrance struc shrubbery is the key to sprucing ture should be complete by June. : "(The Rotarians) have made a good commitment to the pro- Ject," Councillor Pearce said. The new welcoming struc- ture, which visitors will walk through to enter the park, will . bear the name of the Port Perry Rotary Club. The entranceway will resem- ble that of Palmer Park, with the addition of lattice work. Rotary Park will also feature a boardwalk and bridge along the wetland area, which will be built this summer. Benches, garbage cans and recycling containers will be placed throughout the park, and a fishing pier will be built alongside the waterfront park. aN ZILLI Jnana AC) DLR EIR meanssne.
