Each member can only compete in one specialty event. Although Marsha was the winner of both the 100-metre and 200-metre races, she will only represent Canada in the 200-metre race. Marsha will be joined on the team by Laura Lee, another Ux- bridge Swim Club member from Uxbridge who placed second be- hind Marsha in the 100-metre butterfly. In Germany the girls will compete with 10 other girls and 12 boys, who will make up the remainder of the Canadian team. It is an eight-nation meet which will take place April 10 and 11, Last year Marsha was ranked number one in the nation in the 13-14-year-old girls 200-metre butterfly, a distinction she held for most of the year. A previous member of the Carleton Place and Oshawa Swim Clubs she joined the Ux- bridge club in May 1992. Her family moved to Town- ship in June. She has steadily improved since her first meet as a member of the club. This was at the Youth Nationals in Regina where she placed first in the 200-metre butterfly, fourth in the 40-metre individual med- ley, sixth in the 200-metre indi- vidual medley and sixth in the 100-metre butterfly. She swam her personal best at the Provincials. Her time 2:23.49 in the 200-metre butter- fly was the time that set her ahead of the rest. She claimed five medals at the event. The girls leave for Germany on April 6. Midget Eagles advance to All Port Perry Precision Con- struction Eagles qualified for the OMHA N dget BB champi- onship series by Shminaking the Collingwood Legion Vets. Port won three games on the week- end to complete a four game sweep in the semi-finals. Friday night, the Eagles trav- elled to the edge of Georgian Bay for game two, and, as they have done in so many playoff games, struck early. A beefed- up starting lineup paid off with a goal just 35 seconds after the puck. dropped. Jason Phillips sent Brad MacArthur down the left side, from where he laid a perfect pass into the slot for Steve Desautels to deflect past Rob Ring in the Legion Vets' net. Just over four minutes lat- er, Chad Kearns doubled the margin, finishing off a play by tipping a Sean Ellis shot by Ring. Ryan Ridgway also drew an assist on the goal. Before the period was half over, Port had extended the lead to 3-0. Desautels and Sean McEnaney combined to feed Duane mpringham at the point, and the Eagle captain blasted one past Ring, who was: screened by a hard working Da- ryl Bourgeois. The Eagles didn't respond well to the big lead, as some in- different and ' undisciplined play allowed the undermanned, but game, Collingwood team back into contention. Rick Hutchinson was called on to hold the home team at bay sev- eral times, and two ond peri- od goals drew the Legion Vets to 3-2. Bourgeois provided an insu- rance goal late in the second, slipping a bad angle shot through Ring off a Jeff Card pass. The third was scoreless, allowing the Eagles to leave town with a 4-2 win and a 4-0 edge in the eight point series. Saturday night, a decent home crowd saw the Eagles fi- nally break out and score to their potential, pounding the visitors 9-1. McEnaney led the offensive barrage, scoring his first of two just 12 seconds into the game. Mac added a pair of assists, for his second four point game of the playoffs. Phillips, who along with Jere- my Norton, has been providing a solid contribution while ghut- tling between defence and left wing as the need arises, also scored twice for the Eagles. Ma- cArthur turned in his usual Eaglettes capture the gold The Port Perry XL. Gas Bar Novice team skated away with the gold medal in the C Division at the Oro Tournament held on the weekend. This brings the to- tal to three golds and one silver for 1998. All the girls are playing their best ringette so far and putting it all together on the ice as a team. In the previous league game, the XL'ers easily handled Scar- borough No. 1 to a tune of 12-1. In Oro, with the withdrawal of one team, the girls had to face both Oro Novice teams and end- ed up playing the Oro Orange squad for the gold. The Ea- glettes, with super positional play and great passing, won their games by scores of 9-1, 14- 0 and 8-3 in the final. That brings the girls record to 27-3-3 for the season and makes one curious as to how the team would do if moved up to the B di- vision. The big sharpshooter in the past week (four games) has been Alaina Burger with nine goals and two assists. Stacey Cunningham clicked in for four goals and six assists followed by Nicole Virtue who chipped in with four goals and three as- sists. Katherine Cooke popped in four goals and two assists while Leanne Layzell and Rhea Baxter collected two goals and four assists each. Jackie Pash- ley has shown the biggest im- provement lately with great passing and solid skating and she proved it with two, two goal games and a single for five big markers. Another Eaglette who has been playing more aggressively and being rewarded with her in- creased play is Kristen Waller with two goals and three as- sists. Heather Reid, who has been giving us a solid and sound defense along with the opportu- nity to play forward, made the scoresheet for one goal and four assists. Then there is our great little skater, Sarah Verschuur- en who even played goal for a game and got the shutout to gO along with her two goals and three assists. Shannon Warrin- er, playing in her first year, has shown steady improvement and is patrolling her right wing with great confidence and displaying some scoring touch with two goals and three assists. Alaina Davis, who has been moving up and playing forward lately, is also taking advantage of her scoring chances and recorded three goals and one assist. The half of our goal tending tandem, Janna Ostafichuk, played out all weekend, both at defense and forward and she collected three assists in a solid two way Ontario finals strong two way game, setting up McEnaney's early goal, scor- ing the winner a few minutes later on a setup by Kearns and Norton, then adding another as- sist on Empringham's rocket for the game's final tally. Ridgway was the third man in on the ear- ly goal and helped out on an-. other, as well as scoring a nice goal himself. Empringham had an assist to go with his goal, as did Ellis and Bourgeois. Todd Smart and Jer- ro Ba both had a pair of as- sists. Card, Desautels and Scott Heasman each counted a single helper. The Vets arrived for game four with reinforcements, dressing 14 skaters after hav- ing only 10 and nine in the p - vious games. The extra legs seemed to help and it took Port almost a full period to get on the board. Phillips showed the Col- lingwood defence that being knocked down in front wasn't enough to stop him, backhand- ing Desautels rebound into the cage while on his knees. Heas- man set up the power play goal with a hard point shot that Jay Wiele stopped, but couldn't con- trol. : KK Just over two minutes into the second, Kearns clicked on a great pass from Ellis to com- plete a perfectly executed three on one started by Norton. Ellis had a strong series, leading all scorers with eight points. The score stayed at 2-0 until the sec- ond- half of the third period, when Norton set up Bourgeois for his third goal in three games. Bourgeois went upstairs on Wiele from close in on the right side. : With just under two minutes to play, Phillips scored his sec- ond, and fourth in two games, banking one in from the corner. Card and Norton, his third, as- sisted on the goal. The Eagles were solid in their own end all night, denying the Vets any really dangerous chances. Rick Hutchinson took care of the few there were to earn the 4-0 shutout. Port's best intentions toward a disciplined game were derailed by the visi- tors, who drew six game miscon- ducts with their style of play. This led to two game miscon- ducts for the Eagles, and both Heasman and coach Scott will be spectators when the finals start. Neither schedule nor oppo- nent for the finals have been de- cided yet. : in Oro effort. Jill Pashley recorded two wins in the cage and played her usual rock steady self and even got into the scoring when play- ing forward with a tally of one goal and two assists. It was a great team effort and the improved play around the net and the excellent passing combinations and the fine exe- cution of the three-player in rule will be a great asset in the last month of the season in the Eaglettes drive to the league and Regional championships. Keep up the hard work, gir 8, for itis definately paying off. I --_--
