Looking at a listing of the organization's 1992 charitable contributions proves Mr. Taylor's statement might be right on the money. ; Last year the legion donated $21,174 to local organizations and charities. The organization raises the money in a number of ways, says Mr. Taylor, the legion's poppy campaign chairman and public relations officer. "We only go to the public (for money) once a year," Mr. Tay- lor says in reference to the annual poppy campaign in Novem- ber. "Everythingelse is raised internally." : Euchres are held every second Friday, 50-50 draws bringin about $500-$600 a month, and the ways and means committee organizes many draws and raffles. The entertainment commit- tee hosts dances and other in-house events. The Ladies Auxiliary is also a very instrumental compo- nent to the organization's success. The auxiliary rents the hall and provides meals for numerous special events throughout the year. "We are one organization," Mr. Taylor says. "All the money ends upin the general fund." Other than the downstairs bartenders and the cleaning staff, all of the work is done by legion members who volunteer their time. "It can't be stressed enough. All of the work is done through the goodness of people's hearts," he says, adding that contrary to popular belief, legion members are not a bunch of beer drinkers and dart players.
