Tweens participate in 25th a Port Perry Guardian Drugs Tween 'A' team participated in the Oshawa Ringette Associa- tion's 256th Anniversary Tour- nament on Feb. 19 and 20. There were teams from all over Ontario and as far away as Edmonton. Competition was tight in every direction. Their first game against Ne- pean got off to a bad start. Ja- nine had sprained her ankle and was on crutches...a real handicap for the team, and Dana was battling a flu bug. Ne- pean had major energy and "with only eight skaters Port just couldn't seem to rally enough to come back from a 4-2 score. Cara scored the first goal after a great pick up on a pass from Shona. Jenna set Heather up for the second goal. Heather scored again, so we all thought, but the refs didn't see it the same way. Second Game Port was fired up for this .game against Oshawa. Bob fed Cara and Shona something re- markable for lunch - they were awesome. Shona came out fly- ing and got the first two goals assisted by Heather, Cara and Janna. Repeatedly two and three girls were in the penalty box at the same time. Knowing they had to win or tie to have a chance at the cham- pionship, they dug in. Laura found a high corner on a pass from Heather and Janna, then Heather scored quickly from Shona and Cara. With two seconds, left in the game, Port was awarded a pen- alty shot. Shona was the coach- es choice to take this shot and W-O-W what a deke to tie the game 5-5. Congratulations to Shona who scored three goals and assisted one. Third Game This game was against Port's rival from Sudbury who had beat them in the championship. game in North Bay. Subb were flying and got two quic goals. Shona retaliated after re- ceiving a beauty pass from Jan- na to light up the scoreboard. Trailing 3-1 at the end of the first period, coach Senyk rallied the girl's confidence and within a couple of minutes Heather scored twice on shots along the ice. Natasha, Laura and Brooke assisted these goals. Bonni-Jo had enough abuse at her defensive end and deter- mined to score took off for the net. Heather and Shona set her up nicely. Dana strengthened - the lead with a beautiful goal helped by Laura. Janna, Nata- sha and Bonni-Jo tightened up the defensive zone while the of- fense shot time after time on the net. Sudbury managed to tie it up 5-5. With five minutes left both teams braced for the con- frontation ahead. Shona, Cara and Brooke quickly put No. 6 up. With 23 seconds left Shona was awarded another penalty shot. This time her attempt was stumped by the skilled Sudbury goalie. With adrenaline running high, Natasha was ready for the Sudbury rush down the ice to- ward our goalie in the last few seconds. What a check Nata- sha! Their last effort was foiled for Port to win 6-5. Sudbury's No. 13 scored three goals and assisted the other two. Fourth Game Entering into the last game against Whitby, the girls knew that they must have a win. This was definitely Dana's best game ~ of the tournament. With rela- tives galore to applaud, she started off her hat trick with a high shot unassisted. Laura, Bonni-Jo and Heather clicked to set Dana's next two goals up. Although Whitby skated hard, the defense of Natasha, About 25 snowmobilers participated in the Central Ontario Snowmobile Drag Racers As- soclation one-day speed run Sunday on Lake Scugog.
