Pickard then fired a bul- let from close in on passes from Jon Chambers and Adam Brain to make it 5-1. The final goal of the game came off the stick of Fletcher from Brain and Wil- liamson. "Ducky" Brain and "Spike" Orr have been on a hot streak lately from their defen- . sive positions notching seven points each in their last three games. : Jonathon Froats and Alex Be- dell played exceptionally well for their respective teams. Many thanks to Neil Crouter on the fine job of reffing when the referees got their times mixed up. On Friday night Feb. 19 Sca- la played Big V and came out 7- 2 winners. Ashley Van Schelven opened the scoring at the 3:05. mark of the first, period on a breakaway pass from Tom Bak- er and Chris Orr. Up until that point it was all Doug Short as he stopped Travis Pickard twice on breakaways, Tom Baker from his doorstep and several other scoring chances thwarted. The lanky goalie was at his best in the first period as Big V could . well of been down five or six goals at that time. | Half way into the secbnd frame Travis Pickard picked up his first of the hat trick from a beautiful goal mouth pass from Jay Fletcher and Steve Martin. Twenty-two seconds later Van Schelven upped the count to three on a fine rush by Ryan Williamson and Paul Brain. Big V finally got on the score- board as Jamie Sauter one- timed a pass from Mark Sauter 'and Scott Sanderson. Ashley then upped the count to three again from Pickard and Paul Brain. Hard working Scott San- derson then fired a bullet past Scala goalie Jon Chambers on a nifty pass from Brennan Mal- colm to cut the score in half. In the third period Scala's de- fense went to work and gave Jon Chambers plenty of protec- tion, but the forwards bombed goalie Doug Short with Pickard picking up two more from Ash- - ley and Baker and Martin and Colvin: Ashley rounded out the scoring on a-breakaway unas- sisted. Ryan Williamson played solid defence for Scala as Doug Short stopped a lot of rubber for igV. Lindsay 5-4 in overtime petites win first playoff match After bouncing Uxbridge in round robin play, Techstar Ban- tam "B"s and Lindsay square off in a best of seven series to see who advances to the next level of play-offaction. Lindsay has been giving us fits lately winning the last three contests, despite being out shot by margins as high as 4-1. The series opened in Lindsay on Sunday with the Techstar forwards wondering how they will solve the Lindsay goaltend- er. Port opened the scoring early in the first on a screened blast from the point by Devon Blair with the helpers going to Todd Parry. Port held this lead for most of the first before Lindsay replied to knot the score at one. Port once again inched ahead with Techgtar on the powerplay when Gord Bentley found the mark from the point, assisted by Jon Jamieson just before the first buzzer. Early in the sec- ond, Lindsay again pulled even with one of their point men cashingin." . Play at this point was still in Techstars' favor but they were sent away empty again and again frustrated by the Lindsay goaltender. Lindsay took the lead just be- fore the end of the second period on a low drive to Dylan Fergu- son's glove side. With a flood between the sec- ond and third Pete Christie had a chance to rally his troops and rally they did. Matt Hobbs came out and scored twice within seven sec- onds during the first minute to give Port a 4-3 lead. Both as- sists went to Todd Parry. This should have taken the wind out of Lindsay's sails and for awhile it did. One more marker would have sealed it shut but Techstar allowed the tying goal off a face-off and the third period ended in a 4-4 tie. Overtime saw lots of end to end action with Port still domi- nating the play for the most part. However at the halfway mark, Lindsay potted one to take a 5-4 lead. With Lindsay desperately hanging on in the dying min- utes, Port buzzed around the Lindsay net but were denied by the Lindsay netminder. This was a tough loss, espe- cially when Port dominated play the most part and owned a 3-1 margin in shots. But where it counts is on the scoreboard and they came up a nickel short. Next game in this exciting se- ries is on a Sunday at 5:30 p.m. in Port Perry. After a silver medal last week in Guelph, the Community Nursing Home Petites opened their playoff round in Ajax. From the opening free pass the ring went into the Ajax end. Melissa Hooker checked an op- nent sending the ring out to Miranda Burgess who went to the net and Port had an early lead. On the next shift Lauren Christie kept the ring in the Ajax end and set up Julia Lea- men who put the C.N.H. girls ahead 2-0. Ajax struck back for one as they seemed to be getting warmed up on the Olympic size oapad, ennifer Hammond, getting a respite from her goaltending duties, opened a two goal lead with an unassisted effort. Ajax kept coming and the pe- riod ended in a 3-3 draw. Using the free pass to their advantage Ajax took the lead in the first minute of the second period. Halfway through the period a hard working Jennifer Imrie moved the rin where Leanne Holt slammed a hard wrist shot into the back of the net to even the score at four. across in front From the ensuing free pass Melissa Hooker stole the ring, moved it up to Julia, who sent it on to a wide open Jennifer Ham- mond and Port was in the lead again 17 seconds after it was tied. Port got some breathing room when the ring came out of a bunch to Lisa LeFort, who with quick thinking, found, Leanne Holt breaking the Ajax end for her second goal of the game. Two late penalties against Port, a Bont Jun timeout and their goalie on the bench made the finish a nail biter. Despite the 6-3 player advantage the Community Nursing Home Pe- tites skated off with a 1-0 playoff record after some solid defensive work kept Ajax off the score sheet. Sound goaltending was con- tributed by Alicia Burgess while Cathy Cooper was stead- fastin her defense. Leanne Dav- ison and Jennifer Donnell turned in quality efforts wi good scoring chances but could not find the range. Next weekend Port hosts the Whitby 2 team as the playoffs continue after a mid-week re- scheduled game in Mariposa.
