cl a -------- "Scugog "s Community Newspaper of Choice" The championship game of the Lio x ns Club Atom A tournament held at the Scugog Arena on Saturday was a nailbiter to the bitter end. The Port Perry team tied the game at 3-all with 36 seconds remaining in the third period, but Whitby retaliated and netted the winning goal with less than five seconds left in the game. Malmont Farms team members Brad Johnston, Nick Pelyk and Jeff Ashton are pictured congratulating Mike Hamiiton of the Whitby team. Letters to the editor MoJacks down t Official disappointed To the Editor: I was a little bit disappointed at a comment in the sports sec- tion of the Feb. 16 issue of the Port Perry Star. The person who writes the scores for the . Techstar Bantams mentioned that the refereeing in this town is questionable. I am sure that the men and women thatgledicate their time to officiate, time keep, coach, work the front gate, and every person on the executive do the best that they can to help the Malmont Atoms runners-up From Page 31 part of the game shows up when they meet Collingwood on Ftri- day night for game three of their playoff series. The boys gave a great team ef- fort, put together three of their best games this year and should be proud of their performance. Thanks to the tournament orga- nizers who did an excellent job throughout the day and to the sponsors Malmont Farms for their support. PLAY LACROSSE FIN[DURMAN grams. All of these referees would be the first to admit that they are not of NHL quality nor do they pretend to be. They call it as they see it, to the best of their ability, if that is questionable, so be it. The reason I say this is I will bet that the person that wrote the article has never tried refereeing, because if he had, he would realize how difficult it really is. This is not intended for the 99.9 per cent of excellent hockey fans/parents, but to the one in every crowd, either put a whistle or a sock in it! Oh! By the way, I was one of the questionable refs that night! Doing my part for the kids. Dean Stone ASRS By Shawn Bastarache "Bowmanville's more our style. It'll come down to who scores the most goals." It's been almost two weeks since Port Perry MoJack's head coach Ken Harman uttered these words following his club's elimination of the Uxbridge Bruins in the first round of the Central division Jr. C playoffs. At the time, the Bowmanville Eagles were fighting for their playoff lives with the Lakefield Chiefs. Bowmanville prevailed thanks to a 3-2 win in game sev- en and were set for a match-up with the MoJacks. Now, with three of seven games complete, it appears Harman's prediction on the se- ries has rung true. Unfortu- nately for he and his club, how- ever, the opposition has scored the most goals and consequent- ly has a 3-0 lead in the series. In three games, the Eagles have outscored Port Perry 16 - 12 and have not won by more than two goals. It would seem as if they're doing just enough to stay ahead of Port Perry's of- fense. The production of Shane Armstrong and Dave Stockton and consistency of goalkeeper Drew Campbell have been key in giving Bowmanville a stran- gle hold on the MoJacks, with a chance to end it tomorrow night (Wednesday) at S g Arena. Despite strong play by Port Perry's number one line of Jim Vernon, Jody Logan and Shan- non Todd, the MoJacks have not been able to catch up to a faster Bowmanville squad. Both games one and two saw the Eagles employ solid fore- checking, coming at Port Perry from all angles. The result was a 3-0 Bow- manville lead after 20 minutes on both occasions and, as the ModJacks will verify, catch-up hockey will wear even the best teams down. Now in order to advance, Har- man and his club have to put to- gether a four-game winning streak while snapping a three- game losing streak. A tough task that will require a tremen- dous effort on the part of the MoJacks. The Eagles, on the other hand, will be determined to get the series over with for fear of Uxbridge swimmers Uxbridge Swim Club compet- ed at the Eastern Canada up (Short Course) February 12, 18, and 14 at NeTean Sportsplex.
