On March 3, nine of its full- time and volunteer staff will at- tend the Ontario Nursing Home Association's annual oconven- tion in Toronto to pick up the Long-term Care Achievement Award. Activity director Kim Mitch- ell says she has been told the as- sociation was impressed by the nursing home's determination to make a dream trip to Florida a reality for 16 ofits residents. "They thought we were very brave," Mrs. Mitchell told the Star recently. A trip like this "had never been done before." On March 24, 1992, 15 resi- dents -- many confined to wheel- chairs -- and seven staff and vol- unteers, boarded a plane for a one-week vacation in Florida. The dream trip was the cli- max of an agressive fundraising campaign by the residents and stafl to raise the $16,000 needed for the trip. (The residents and staff also had to pay a portion of the costs out of their own pock- ets.) While in Florida, the group visited Disney World, the Ship of Romance, Universal Studios; Daytona Beach, and Catfish Johnny's where they saw a live alligator show. : any of the travellers had never been to Florida, and some had never been out of Canada, Mrs. Mitchell said. She says the most amazing thing about the trip was how it boosted the self-confidence of Did you know that 10,000 families shop every week at 30 WATER STREET - PORT PERRY, ONT. Fundraising has already started for the venture, and will probably gain momentum soon. A volunteer meeting was held last night (Monday) to discuss the nursing home's fundraising activities for the year. In the meantime, residents, staff and volunteers are anx- iously awaiting the awards pre- sention at the Harbor Castle Hilton and are hoping two hours of video tape from their Florida trip can be condensed to 10 min- utes and set to music in time for the convention. Scugog's garbage feesto increase It is going to cost the Town- Scugog considerably more to dispose of garbage this year. Fon, hi In a bid to make the cost of garbage disposal uniform across the region, Scugog's cost for garbage disposal rose by 56 per cent. ett Last year the fee was based on a rebate structure per commu- nity. But ini an effort to make the fee universal, a region-wide rate of $70 per tonne was ap- plied across the board. This new structure signifi- cantly increases Scugog's per household rate. Under the new system, the rate per household jumped from $41 dollarsin 1992 to $64 in 1993, a jump of 56 per cent. The average increase across the region was 12 per cent. : It is estimated the new fee structure will collect approxi- mately $7.85 million in landfill and transfer costs. It will collect $412,300 from Scugog alone, up from $289,356 last year. Mayor Howard Hall said he was shocked when he saw Scu- gog's increased costs. He said the new numbers were going to affect Scugog the most as it saw the highest rate increase of all the municipalities.
