Among those being honored were 10 residents of Scugog Township who each received a Commemorative Medal for the 125th Anniversary of Canadian Confederation. In a letter to the recipients from His Excellency The Right Honorable Ramon John Hnatyshyn, he cited "those being awarded have made a significant contribution to their community, or to their fellow Canadians. This decoration is a reminder of the values of ser- vice, individual respect and community effort on which ~ Canada was built and on which its quality of life will always depend." Speaking to a crowd of about - 300 who gathered for the cere- mony, Durham M.P. Ross Stevenson said he was honored to be sharing the occasion with the recipients who he felt truly represented those admired, cherished in the world around us. "The people we are honoring tonight are most certainly the cream of the crop from our communities," he concluded. As the medals were handed out by M.P. Stevenson, Durham College administrator Gary Polonsky read out brief cita- tions about each of the recipients. Those receiving the honor from Scugog Township were: Dr. Matthew B. Dymond, Kent Farndale, Grace Hastings, J. Peter Hvidsten, Joyce Kelly, Pleasevecycle this newspaper | Dr. Tom Millar, Gary Roncetti, Mary June Smith, Jean Van- Camp and Merrill VanCamp. Following each presentation, photos were taken of the recipi- ent along with the M.P. and two RCMP officers. Concluding the ceremonies, Durham Region's first Chairman, Walter Beath thanked everyone for coming and praised Ross Stevenson and his staff for their efforts in organizing the ceremony. Mr. Beath said he was sure many more residents through- out the Region were equally deserving of recognition and. that he was deeply honored to have been chosen at this time. "I believe we all worked, not for recognition, but because we love and care about our coun- try and communities and do whatever possible to make them a better place to live," he said. A reception followed for the recipients, their families and friends. Ten Scugog Township residents. received Commemorative Medals for making ~ Residents receive Commemorative Medals , J. Kidney Foundation volunteers will be canvassing in March Port Perry/Blackstock has of- ficially proclaimed March as Kidney Month. Throughout the month, Kidney Foundation vol- unteers will be knocking on doors to help raise money to support research into kidney disease, patient services and public education programs. This year's goal for Durham Region is $60,000. The Toronto & District Chapter's overall campaign goal is $465,000. Thanks to the support of the community, the foundation has funded research that has led to major advances in dialysis treatments, more effective pro- cedures for kidney and other or- gan transplants, non-surgical methods for specific kidney stone problems, and improved rhedication for treating high blood pressure and anaemia. The Kidney Foundation of Canada is dedicated to improv- ing the health and quality of life of people living with kidney dis- ease. Both were awarded 125th Anniversary Commemorative Medals last Friday evening by Durham M.P. Ross Stevenson.
