"A Family Tradition for 126 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, December 8, 1992 - 33 Country Style Bantams win consolation Game one of what turned out to be a very busy week for the Country Style Bantam No. 1 team was a match-up with the Oshawa Canadians. Oshawa took an early lead in the first period but that proved to be their only chance to beat Scot Prechitko who stoned them on any other attempt. Port lit up the scoreboard on a power-play effort with Kenton LeFort net- ting the goal and Ian Shrigley and Craig Laird picking up the assists. Friday night Port travelled to Stouffville to faceoff against the Clippers. Whenever these two teams meet sparks fly and that they did! Port lost the match 4-1 in what proved to be a very con- troversial game costing us not only the game but the services of wingman Ian Shrigley on a very questionable call. Stouffville Tournament Early Sunday morning Port found themselves back in Stouffville Arena for a one-day tournament. This time their op- ponents were the squad from Richmond Hill. These two teams played a solid hitting game with both teams scoring twice in the first period. Port's Kevin Hobbs was there to put home the first with Kenton as- sisting, then at the 11 second mark Craig combined with Jer- emy to pop in number two. Port's final goal came in the sec- ond period on a pretty passing play between Bill and Jay with the goal coming off the end of Kenton's stick. The final score ended with Port on the losing end of a 6-3 score. : Heading up the consolation ladder Port's next opponents were from Metro Toronto. Port took an early command of the game showing off their out- standing skating and stick han- dling abilities. Although the boys all knew their way to and Canadian Tire Canadian Tire Islander Mid- get Bs played in Millbrook on Monday, Nov. 30 to start off a very busy week. The Isles took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Mark Co- sway with assists to Corey Wil- son and Lou Whitfield early in the first period. Millbrook scored the only goal in the sec- ond period to tie the score at 1-1. In the third period the "C" line connected when John Hall scored with assists to Jeff Ver- non and Brett Lawson. With less than four minutes to play Corey Wilson scored with as- sists to Lou Whitfield and Mike Williams. Millbrook scored with 1:30 left on the clock to make the score 3-2. Millbrook pulled their goalie in favor of an extra at- tacker, but the Isles stood strong and came home with a 3- 2 win. Tuesday, Dec. 1 the Isles travelled to Sunderland and couldn't adapt to the small ice surface and went down to defeat by a score of 5-4. Mike Staniland scored in the first for a 1-0 lead but by the 3:00 mark of the third Sunder- land held a 4-1 lead. It looked like a comeback was underway when Mark Cosway fired three around the penalty box, they still managed to come away with a 4-2 victory. Brian Bick- more played real stand-up goal tending today with the line of Jason Logan, Tim Fitzpatrick and Tom Chambers playing sol- id on both the penalty killing and power-playing shifts. Nice work boys. Port's goal scorers were Craig, Kenton, Bill and Darryl with Chris, Darryl, Jay and Tom picking up assists. The consolation final saw Port paired up with the Whitby team for the trophy. The name Country Style never fit a team so well as it did Port's Bantam No. 1 squad today. As the op- posing team along with the fans continually taunted our boys in red with cheap shots on the ice and heckling from the stands the boys got even, not by get- ting penalties but by out skat- ing and out hustling the Whitby team. Darryl started off the scoring with Jeremy and Craig assisting. As the second period opened up so did Jay King as he flipped on the jets and rocketted through the opposition, making it look easy with help from Ke- vin and Kenton. Whitby tried all the tricks as the clock wound down, but nothing could get to the Port Perry players or coach- es as they all displayed cool con- fidence and plenty of style. Ian MacCready put the icing on the cake in the third period, mak- ing sure the trophy came home to Port Perry as he netted Port's third of the game with Jeremy notching the assist. Great game, guys! The parents and players would also like to thank Ken Carruthers and Country Style Donuts for their continuing support and generous donation of juice after each home game. Thanks a million. Port's next game is at home Monday 7:30 p.m. straight goals to tie the score at 4-4 with less than four minutes to play, but Sunderland man- aged one more to take the win b- 4. Assists to Jason Coutoulakis and Chad Garvock with four each as they set up all four goals. Wednesday, Dec. 2 the Isles played host to the shorthanded [Little Britain Midgets. In this game a miracle hap- pened, two Midget teams played three periods of penalty free hockey. The Isles coasted to a 10-1 victory on goals by Dave Pashley - four, Steve Stiles - two, Mike Williams - one, Mark Cosway, Jeff Vernon and Simon Traynor. Guardian The Guardian Drugs ringette team has done it again. On Thursday night the girls went to play against a hard working Ajax team in Pickering Village. The game started at a very fast pace, but Janine Hammond managed to sneak one by the Ajax goalie. Not one minute lat- er Ajax came back with a very hard shot that our amazing goalie Katie Senyk just could not save. After five more min- utes of play Ajax went ahead by one. The second period started with a boom for the Guardian Drugs team with Shona Moase Bancroft scored two in the second period to take a 2-1 lead into the third. At the 8:30 of the third, Dave Pashley converted a pass from Mark Cosway to tie the game at 2-2. Late in the pe- riod Bancroft scored to take a 3- 2 lead. Despite having the goalie on the bench the Isles couldn't score the equalizer. Final score 3-2 for Bancroft. Game 3'D" Final Against Madoc Once again the Isles came out fast and worked hard and scored at 4:48 of the first on a nice goal by Andrew Pereman unassisted. Both teams worked hard, but neither team could score again until late in the sec- ond period when Chad Garvock converted a pass from Jason Coutoulakis to make the score 2-0. No further scoring by ei- ther team allowed the Isles to become "D" champs. Congratu- lations! Drugs Tweens win putting one in quickly from a pass by Dana Hooker. That goal was just what the team needed to get them going again, espe- cially Heather Tredway who put in the next two goals, mak- ing the score 4-2. With the de- fence working hard, the Guardi- an Drugs team finished the game with a score of 4-2. Great game, guys! Certificates D. J.
