"A Family Tradition for 126 Years" Cornish volleyball teams conclude a successful season The R.H. Cornish boys volley- ball team are the Durham Cen- tral volleyball champions. The Cougars defeated the cross-town S.A. Cawker Eagles two games straight (15-8, 15- 12) to earn the Northern Cham- pionship title. In the all-Durham finals Cor- nish put forth a good effort but lost to both Central Park and Pringle Creek. Central Park Saturday, Dec. 5, Pee Wee house league action had Big V playing host to Emiel's. The last time these two clubs met it was a very low scoring and yet high- ly entertaining game and this one was to be no different. Big V broke out on top first as Eric Beiers tipped one into the corner of the net on a long pass from Scott Sanderson. Also as- sisting on the play was Jamie Sauter. Emiel's kept the pres- sure up and it paid off midway through the opening period as they tied the game at one apiece as Blayne Kinnunen scored with assists going to Jeremy Pare and Devin Edwards. The second period opened with Emiel's taking a quick 2-1 lead as Luke Newman fed the pass ahead to Jeremy Pare who ripped a slapshot to the top cor- went on to win the champion- ship. The R.H. Cornish co-ed vol- leyball team tied for first with Pringle Creek in the DEAA Co- ed Volleyball playoffs in their pool. In the quarter-final round the Cougars lost to Central Park and were eliminated from fur- ther play. Big V defeats Emiel's 3-2 ner of the net from the top of the face off circle. This was to be Emiel's last goal as Big V goalie Doug Short did everything in- cluding the odd head-stand to keep the puck out of his net. This seemed to inspire his team to play harder as they came back to tie things up at 2-2. Brennan Malcolm started the play as he fed a pass to Marc Sauter who in turn put a perfect pass onto Jamie Sauters' stick and he made no mistake with this one. Big V's Brad Monsma scored the only goal of the third period which proved to be the winner with assists going to Marc Sauter and Scott Sander- son giving Big V the 3-2 win. Next Pee Wee house league action is on Saturday, Dec. 19 as Emiel's vs Scala at 7:20 a.m. and Larocque vs Big V at 8:40 Overhead Doors and Manvers tie 2-2 in league play On Nov. 23 the Scugog Over- head Doors Pee Wee No. 2 team travelled up Highway 12 to take on the team from Sunderland. In this game both started out with a flurry in the first period as Port jumped out to a 2-0 lead, Sunderland came back with two quick ones, then Port finished out the period with a 3-2 lead. Leading the charge for Port was Gavin Baxter with two and Jeremy Gibson with the other. Assists going to Justin Halligan and Adam Hobbs. In the second period Sunder- land got the upper hand as they took it to Port for two more goals and a 4-3 lead after the second period. Both teams experienced many chances in the third but Port eventually tied it with Jus- tin Halligan showing no mercy as he drove it home from the slot. Assists for this goal went to Jeremy Gibson and Gavin Bax- ter. Unfortunately for Port, Sun- derland broke the deadlock late in the third to sneak out a 6-4 win. Our boys certainly showed some fine hustle and with con- tinued effort should soon see some wins ahead. Last Monday night (30th), they were up against Bowman- ville in an exhibition game at the Scugog Arena. In an enter- taining first period with both teams playing well it was Bow- manville who jumped out to an early 2-0 lead. The play in the second was much the same with action all the way. Port finally hit the scoreboard late in the period as the the effort from Justin Halli- gan paid off in a goal. Assist to Jeremy Gibson. Bowmanville never let up and their strong of- fensive play in the second pushed the score to 3-1. In the third on a nice play, Jeremy Gibson deflected a shot in front of the net to narrow the score to 4-2. Assists to Ryan Puckrin and Wyatt Park. Port pressed hard until the end but fell short losing 5-2. Last Saturday the boys took on Manvers in league action at the Scugog Arena. In an enter- taining game for all to see they skated to a 2-2 tie. Manvers got the edge early in the first, but Port's pressure finally paid off late in the period as Justin Hal- ligan scored to even the game at 1-1. Assisting on the goal was Dave Gainey. In the second, Port broke the deadlock, as once again Justin Halligan scored with Ryan Moynes assisting. Manvers came back to tie the game late in the second. Neither team could force a winner in the third as both defences play well to maintain the tie. Good effort guys keep up the good work. The R.H. In the first period Bob's Esso from Lindsay took a 3-1 lead. The only goal scored for .G.A. was by Don McKay who got a great pass from Mike Lott and Neil Hancock helped too. At the end of two, it was 5-2 which is when we started to work together. Our second goal was scored by Matt Mantel, with help from Mike Lott and Neil Hancock. We fought back to a one goal deficit, with hard work and great teamwork. Our next goal was scored by Matt Brown with an assist from Matt - Grills. Then, Mark Thornton had an end-to-end rush and capped it, with a goal unassist- ed. This brought us within one goal, but then Lindsay scored a power-play goal. The final goal was scored by Matt Grills with an assist from Neil Hancock. The final score of a well fought game was 6-5 for Lindsay. Then next was on Saturday in Oakwood vs I.G.A. They came out on top beating Can- nington 4-2. Cannington struck first with Elaine West scoring from in close. I.G.A. then scored and they tied it up. The goal was scored by Mike Lott and as- sisted by Dan McKay and Matt Mantel. Then in the second pe- riod we took the lead with a scramble in front, with Greg Bonser scoring and Matt Grills with Mark Thornton helping. In the third we took a two goal lead when Matt Grills scored from Greg Bonser and Mark Thornton. Cannington came within two, then Mike Lott scored a Sg goal to put it away. Mike Wilson kept us in the game with great goal tending. This win put us in the "B" championship game. The championship game was full of penalties with 100 min- utes in total. This was not a great game to watch with chip- py play and not great referee- ing. We scored one goal against the Ajax All Saints. It was by Don McKay with help from Mark Thornton and Al Chan- dler. The final score was 4-1 for Ajax. Thanks for Johno Bab- cock for tending goal in this game. Scoring in the tourney were Matt Mantel one goal, one as- sist; Mark Thornton one goal, three assists; Mark Grills two goals, two assists; Don McKay two goals, two assists; Matt Brown one goal; Mike Lott two goals, two assists; Neil Hancock three assists; Al Chandler one assist. ---- sikkens Authorized Dealer SIKKE Translucent Interior Finishes Cetol TS Interior Satin A flexible transparent satin finish, designed to stain, seal and protect wood surfaces - all in onel Cetol TS Interior Gloss A gloss version of TS Interior Satin.
