(Agr.) ra, 'Lynann Outram new director of farm child care program If you are a farm or rural fam- ily with young children or if you are a caregiver interested in providing full or part time care to farm or rural children, Ly- nann Outram wants to hear from you. Ms. Outram has been recent- ly appointed as the new director for the Durham West Farm Child Care Program. This pro- gram has received new funding for two years from the Child Care Initiatives Fund, a federal program, to expand their servic- es. The program was started in 1988 by the Bethesda-Reach Women's Institute to address safety of young children on the farm. Farms are not always safe places for children without proper supervision. Statistics show that from 1976 to 1986, 80 children were killed on Ontario farms, four in Durham Region. This new program is set up to work in partnership with other services - including Port Perry Agricultural Employment Ser- vices and the Durham Region Public Health to provide a va- riety of services to meet child care needs of farm and rural families. Services include an On the Farm Child Care Program run- ning from late spring to fall which provides safe, flexible, quality child care at the parents own farm/home. A Caregiver Registry, which is a list of caregivers providing childcare in their homes or who are willing to travel to parents farms/homes. A Resource Centre and Toy Lending Library located at the Uxbridge Baptist Church (Tuesday and Thursday 9 a.m. - 3 p.m,). Training courses, resources and support to caregivers and parents. Program focuses on farm concerns Sally Barrie, co-ordinator of the Durham Region Farm Fam- ily Enhancement Program, is focusing on issues and concerns of farm families in Durham Re- gion. The Ontario County Farm Safety Association will provide a program at their annual meet- ing on the importance of farm family vacations, and vacation- ing on a "shoe string." The meet- ing will be held on Jan. 7 at the Port Perry Agricultural Office. The Enhancement Program will also be holding a one day workshop in March to look at re- tirement planning. The intent of the workshop will be to ad- dress not only the financial af- fairs and health care, but lei- sure pursuits, housing and relationships that change with retirement plans. The day will follow a three-session program on estate planning provided by O.M.A'F. staff. All ages are en- couraged to attend. Watch for upcoming pro- grams this winter. Make it a family affair! Many of the students expressed interest in agencies which could be of as- sistance to their families. The Infomart was open to the public and those who dropped in were interested and learned a lot. All involved agreed that this venture was very successful. The North Durham Social De- velopment Council plans to of- fer an Infomart in high schools in Cannington, Port Perry and Uxbridge on a three-year cycle. The next one will be in the fall of 1993 either at Brock or Port Perry High School.
